gday ladies and gentlemen

i was adjusting my vavles the other day and decided to check the timing

there are 4 marks on the crank pulley

1 on its own (for TDC)

and 3 together (for timing light purposes)

when i set it to the standard OEM settings, the car drives sluggish and hesistates around 2-3k rpm mark

when i set it advanced 2 degrees, car runs like a champ!

but when it was sitting at around the 16 degree mark, car would sometimes struggle to start, or would idle weirdly!

my first question is, maybe the timing belt was installed incorrectly?
maybe mechanical timing is not aligned or out of wack?

also, if i line up the mark thats on it own on the crank to the cover mark, should the cam gears be pointing in the UP direction? or am i doing something wrong?

it's been racking my brains out since i've had the car, and ive always thought that there must be some magical way to do it because its the almighty b16b

but maybe im wrong, maybe something is dying or dead (replace the dizzy cap and rotor and coil not long ago with NON genuine parts*couldnt get a hold of genuine parts, had to wait months for it*)

any help would be appreacited guys

When crank is at tdc the lines on cam pulleys should line up.

Did you bridge diagnostic port when setting ignition timing?

yes i did, its the one situated above the ECU right? when bridged the ENGINE light and ABS lights start to flash if codes are shown correct?

Yes that's correct. When set at 16 degree's roughly what position is distributor in relation to top mounting point?

when sitting at 16 degrees the dizzy and block mount is even so if i marked the dizzy and dizzy mount halfway it would be right in the middle.

if you want i'll take a picture of it in 16 degree mode and post it up

its weird tho, it's very very sluggish at 16deg running on 100 octane fuel too!

Normally if cam timing(intake cam) was out even a tooth your distributor position would be either far left or right of the mounting tab but fact yours is center would suggest it's ok. Exhaust cam timing would still need to be verified.

If your running 100octane fuel you should be fine advancing timing 2 degree's. Just keep a eye on the engine for pinking under heavy loads.

when i put it on the dyno (dizzy was really advanced for some unknown reason, but it ran awesome!)

gday ladies and gents

finally got around to getting the timing belt replaced,
and guess what?

the timing belt was off 1 tooth, owner before me had it replaced, so i decided to replace the whole kit with water pump and she drives awesome now!

also replaced the 4 bearings in the transmission aswell, she is sooooo quiet now!!!!

guys, i got my timing belt changed few weeks ago

the mechanic set the timing at 14 deg
i jumped the service connector and set the timing back to 16 deg (red line)

car is more responsive and lively to drive, but i get this tinny noise, like spark knock or when you upgrade headers (the sand paperery noise)

car is currently running 98 octane (since the day ive got it) and the car rescently had a full service with all fluids and plugs, cap and rotor

but the dizzy is making a ticking noise on cold start only.. maybe that is a problem"?

need help!!

I've checked the mechanical side of things, they were spot on, installed new dizzy too, only 2 things I can think of now, fuel pump or injectors cause it has a flat spot around 2-3k rpm
