Ok so car has been running pretty sweetly lately.

HOWEVER, a couple of recent occasions I have noticed a kind of cracking sound at idle :nerv: it's very intermittant and only does it when hot.

No other symtpoms.

The first time I noticed it the car was very hot and had been sat in traffic for well over 10mins stop start.

Today I was stopped at roadworks for about a minute and noticed it again.

I presume it's valve train maybe valve clearances but the engine only has 6k on it so surely the clearances are not out...

Any thoughts?

Some videos from today

Valve train noise is usually greater when cold, before parts have expanded,
Maybe worth a check over though, as the new cams would of worn in now,

Also look for any cracks in exhaust manifold or loose spark plugs(although these sort of things are usually louder when cold to)

It's a clicky cracking kinda sound and almost like its on one cylinder due to the intermittency.... Only does it on idle. And only herd it a handful of times...

Fukcing car pisses me off, got nurburgring in a few weeks I have fcuking had enough if this siht!

Alot of the time these noises and smells etc are in your head, on the way to euro spec today I was constantly what's that noise, can you smell that? Paranoid that something is going to fall off or vibrate loose/leak.

At least you have got a car for the ring trip!

May take the EP and just start breaking this up.

It was a definite noise. Very noticeable :(

Been searching LMA's but I have the spring type so can't be that.

I had this similar a few years ago and promoted the first strip down.

I really wouldn't break this but can see why your getting fed up of it. Perhaps a clicky injector or something less important than the engine itself? Probably better to try and capture it on video or some thing.
Honestly if it was me I would just keep driving it, you got European breakdown? I'd defo take it to the ring and you'll fall in love with it again.

Just heard the video,
I'm stumped for what that is, maybe whip off the cam cover and have a nose about see if you can spot anything tapping against something it shouldn't?
Sounds quite like a timing chain noise?

Yeah which obviously I don't have :) unless I have a k20 inside my b18....

Valve clearances would't cause this though would it?

I think it's odd that it only happens when hot?

You'll need to get under the bonnet when it happens again and try to locate where it's coming from. Any chance it could be coming from the gearbox?

Yeah wasn't trying to say it was a timing chain, just trying to understand the type of noise lol
Sometimes the injectors can make a funny noise like that. As said I'd try and get the noise to happen and have a listen about with a screwdriver.

Not strange at all really mate when you consider that engine components swell as the engine gets hotter.

I'm sure I read that forged components expand more aswell. Was warned by romain today not to get my turbo build too hot because of the pistons etc expanding too much.

Not sure about forged expanding more.
Expanding - that's the word I wa looking for in my previous post lol.
But Ian... If you think how small the clearances/tolerances were in your engine when it was built. They get that bit smaller still when hot. So I wouldn't be surprised if something was slightly catching something.
When we built my mates high comp b18cR, the piston skirt was just catching the oil squirter. Not enough for us to notice at first, but caused us trouble later on obviously

What's the oil pressure when hot?

oil temps and pressures have been normal.

35-40 lbs when hot at idle. 70-90 lbs normal driving.

No lubrication issues there then I wouldn't think,

Another thing you could look at is distributer bearings

Good call my mate had a horrible knocking/tapping noise that we originally thought was in the head but it eventually got worse and became obvious it was the dizzy. Changed it, and problem solved
