Ive just installed a 4-2-1 manifold on my d14,on acceleration (and ONLY on acceleration) it makes a muffled "ticking" noise. Im certain its not a leak, and although the header is second hand it looked to be in good condition so doubt its a crack :(

Im guilty of re-using the donut gasket as again seemed to be in good condition, wasnt falling apart etc...

any help would be great!

noticed my ek9 sounds a bit more ticky with the 4-2-1 on it to... dont think its much to worry about :secret:

Is it touching the sump? Try and feed a piece of paper or something similar in between sump and top of manifold under the sump.....

as said mate, could be blowing.. from cold start it up, and before it gets too hot, run your hand over the welds etc and try to feel for blowing

is the face of the mani flat?

and what order did you tighten it up in?

Hi...

Could be a little bracket that is used between cat and manifold, forgetting to bolt that? I fitted new bolts and nuts on my exhaust system and completely forgot to bolt that....i noticed this when i used to rev to 3x rpm it made a crinkly sound. Also you could get it on the ramp and locate where the noise is exactly coming from.

manifolds tend to tick when they're blown or cracked

Surely "Jimbo" off here wouldnt sell me a cracked manifold :nerv:

Il try that, thanks. Where do they usually crack about, near the head im guessing?

Tightened it from the centre of the manifold outwards...

Im tempted to take it along to farmers/kwik fit and get them to diagnose the problem, then do the work myself lol

Get someone to sit in the car and mildly rev it....and you perhaps have a look and locate the noise?

Ive thought of this, but if its blowing down by the collector/donut manifold i wont be able to get under without jacking it up! :(

Edit: Also its not that bracket you are talking about as the new manifold doesnt have one!

Yeah and you should defo trust their diagnosis

Well obv you cant be ar$ed doing it

Ask us at ek9.org we give you advice and then you moan about jacking it up - it would be more hassle going to kwik fit then taking it home to fix - i mean if you can fix it surely you can check it yourself.

What was the need in that, read properly.

Im getting at the point that im going to need to jack it up,and have the engine running, and have someone revving it.

Dont know where larkhall is,but if the weathers anything like Edinburgh just now,the car will get blown off any jack lol!

Also need this sorted before saturday, and i cant seem to find any store i can walk in and buy a donut gasket from, only online. Guessing kwik fit would have this.

I read the whole thread and I assumed you couldnt be bothered. It definately reads that way.

What you actually need to do is get someone to block your tail pipe off - or do it yourself while having a look at the manifold - no need for revving at all

You will find the leak much quicker

Weather is same here Larkhall is near Motherwell outside Glasgow.

Dont you have axle stands?

Put your old manifold back on - I am definately going to say its not the donut gasket - you could try some exhaust paste / gum on the gasket if you find out it is leaking but im really certain it will not be that.

Take it to an underground car park and jack it up and see what the issue is or just wait till the wind has calmed down tomorrow and do it then if your not in a rush. Does sound like a cracked manifold but could easily be its not clearing the engine properly especailly if its a cheap manifold.
