Now I’m using my EK9 more and more for trackdays, I feel my tired little B16b could do with some more power and an overhaul. I know K20 conversions are expensive, but I just don’t know which direction is likely to be more cost effective and retain good driveability on a daily bases. You input on the following would be much appreciated.

1. K20 engine swap
2. Rebuild and stroke my current B16b to 1800cc
3. Turbocharge using a T28 which I currently have

for the best power/reliability ratio its got to be a K20 all day long.

Lots of people with I/H/E bolt ons making 250bhp and a shed load of torque, plus you get 6 gears.

I just can't justify splashing out £6-7k on a car which is probably worth only £4k. Wouldn't a k20 upset the weight distribution of the chassis?

Have you thought about putting in a gear kit and upgrading to race brakes like an AP kit or Brembo? Those were the best mods I did and that includes the k swap

Cheapest option is get, B18c type r crank and rods, and keep your b16b pistons, either run it on b18c ecu or go piggy back or stand alone, cheap reliable daily driver, then you could look at how you are delivering the power ie your gearbox and start playing with that!

k20 would be my pick or b18c been my second, b18 is cheaper but cost more to get same power from less mods on k20 , if my memory serves me right the k20 is pretty much the same weight as a b18c , i googled it to and some say it same soem say it 10pounds lighter ,

I love my B18C swap. I also have the 98 spec gearbox with the 4.7 final drive. Car is so much fun to drive.

I'm sure if you spent some money on driver tuition at trackdays you could drive you B16 faster than joe bloggs in a K20

For me my 164whp B16b mapped , with mfactory ratios, wilwood calipers and stripped interior is a blast, as i learn the track i can feel the laps get quicker, i'm now going to learn the car instead of adding extra bits and then re-learning the car at every trackday as its never the "same" car

B18CR all the way. And/Or build it to 2.0ltr
K20 nope.
K24 yup!

Does more power = Fun ?

IMO Id go down the 1800cc route but spend the rest on decent coilovers /
pads / tyres and maintenance etc

ive turbo'd my 9 now using garrett t3/t4 hybrid turbo running 340bhp. it has changed the whole car. nothing gets past me now and is so much fun. i would go turbo myself.

at silverstone using my standard b16b i overtook 3 ep3s and a dc2 type r and few others. i must admit the b16b feels suited to a track if used right.
