hi everyone, i was just wondering because my car has like 80,000 miles on it now and it feels like the sycnchro's are starting to go on my car. because it has started to grind through the gears. i was wondering weather to get just a orignal one or something after market.

i have seen the tread about different ratio's and final gears and that, but truthally i dont understand any of this because i dont know if the final gear changes the whole inside of the gear box or short ratio's do, im just not sure. is it possible can any1 help me out please thanks.

A shorter final drive (ie 4.4) will produce longer gear changes and a bigger top speed.

A bigger final drive (ie 4.9) will produce shorter gear changes and a lower top speed.

So all depends what you want from your car. The standard set up (4.7 final drive) is very good all round.

As shown here...

Before you go changing all your gearbox internals etc...Try changing the gearbox fluid and see what happens.

Its a much cheaper and beneficial thing to do really.

But make sure you put in the right stuff. MTF94 I believe Honda supply.

its the other way round.. (4.4 and 4.9)

thanks for the info lads. so you mean the standard set up in a ek9 from the factory is a 4.7 something final drive and you think thats the best 1 so just keep it??

yeah i will try and change the gearbox oil and see what happens and if it doesnt i will do something after.

Changing your FD does not change your gear ratios (i.e how far apart/close each gear is from each other). Your rpm drops in each gear stay the same as oem. What it does do though is make you sit at a higher rpm than oem when at the same speed, thus torque is increased.

With the close gear set, this brings your gearing closer together, thus reducing the rpm drops when you change gear. In addition, the higher ratio will also have the same affect as the final drive does i.e increase your rpm at any given speed over oem.
Your standard FD is 4.4, depends on what money you have when you take the box apart, get as many things done to save on labour.

And an EK9 with a 4.9 will do alot more than 198.4 km/h :D;)

Alot more?? How much do you think will reach considering always untouched rev limiter? 200 - 210 km/h max?? That's not alot more :blabla:

geerspeed sells carbon coated synchros, that there prices for gearsets are pretty cheap, but if all your gears are grinding i would look to the clutch or throughout bearing first.

actually you know what it is my car has done like 80,000 miles and i dont think it has had a cutch change yet, when is the right time to change it??

and it grinds into alot of gears actually, and another very very worrying thing is that when i put it into reverse gear it gets stuck kinda of and you really have to force it out im mean like get to hands onit to get it out of gear..???
you can hear the thrust bearing when u put the clutch in and out when in neutral.

do u think its the clutch or do u think its something else??

unfortunately when you fail to change the clutch on time it can really hurt the gearbox, i hope yours is ok, but it sounds like its in REALLY bad shape :( 80,000 miles is A LOT, to have on a stock clutch for a sports type car... most people i know are blessed by god himself if they make it to 30,000 miles.

I changed my gear box oil recently with Landrover MTF as it's cheaper than Honda stuff.

Not crunched since:D

well thats what i think i will do i will change my gearbox oil and see what happens, i have a mate that works at honda and at landrover so i will see what i will get, but most likely i will get the honda stuff.

i am going to get a new clutch for my car and fly wheel, does anybody on here have any recomandations for 1, im not sure about getting a performance 1, one of the guys told me he could get 1 and its basically the same as the standard 1 but its abit uprated so it will last longer but i dont know the name.

I have EXCEDY clutch & lightend flywheel (jst under 10lbs)... great mods! :nice:

im having the same grinding problem wit my ek9 mate at 65,000 miles. any ideas what other boxes fit may work out cheaper to replace

either rebuild the gearbox and assure that its fixed, or you cold purchase and itr 98 spec gearbox, giving you a 4.7 fd.
