Honda recommendations when storing your vehicle.

If you need to park your vehicle for an extended period (more than one month), there are several things you should do to prepare it for storage.

Proper preparation helps prevent deterioration and makes it easier to get your vehicle back on the road. If possible, store your vehicle indoors.

  • Fill the fuel tank.
  • Change the engine oil and filter.
  • Wash and dry the exterior completely.
  • Clean the interior. Make sure the carpeting, floor mats, etc. are completely dry.
  • Leave the parking brake off. Put the transmission in Reverse (manual transmission) or Park (automatic transmission).
  • Block the rear wheels.
  • If the vehicle is to be stored for a longer perioid, it should be supported on jackstands so the tires are of the ground.
  • Leave one window open slightly (if the vehicle is being stored indoors).
  • Disconnect the battery.
  • Support the front and rear wiper blade arms with a folded towel or rag so they do not touch the windshield.
  • To minimize sticking, apply a silicone spray lubricant to all door and hatch seals. Also, apply a vehicle body wax to the painted surfaces that mate with the door and hatch seals.
  • Cover the vehicle with a "breathable" vehicle cover, one made from porous material such as cotton. Nonporous materials, such as plastic sheeting, trap moisture, which can damage the paint.
  • If possible run the engine for a while periodically (preferably once a month).
Hope you find this information useful. :nice:

Outstanding, since my car is not a daily driver i have found this information very useful and have been already doing most of whats on the list, this is what i do:

-Wash car before storage and keep interior clean.
-Use a solar trickle charger to keep the battery charged.
-Start the car at least once every two weeks and let it run for about 10 minutes.
-If its summer time i use a car cover to protect the paint, during winter i do not use a car cover.
-If i do not drive it for more than 2 weeks i will put the car in neutral and roll it back a few feet (or forward) so the tires do not have constant pressure on one spot only.
-I personally like to keep my windows up cause I'm scared of bugs lol...

Nice! I am studying in the US for 8 Months and I have my my Clio Sport parked...It will be for 8 Months..My brother starts it once a week, I did almost everything on that list besides

Fill the fuel tank (Its 1/2)

Its on the tires not on jackstands cause i was worried something could bend with all the weight of the rims and tires while up....

And handbrake is on... should i tell my brother to take it off and leave it on 1st gear..?

Cheers

I think you should do this:

  • Leave the parking brake off. Put the transmission in Reverse (manual transmission) or Park (automatic transmission).
Keep in mind the car you are parking is not a Honda, this is a recommendation from the Honda manual.

Thanks RVM! Why on reverse instead of 1st gear??.. Hey I see you are from Guatemala, I am from Costa Rica.. Thats cool!

Cheers!

I asked the same question to a Honda mechanic and he told me that you should live the car in reverse to prevent syncros wear :(

Yes, I'm from Guatemala, un saludo! pura vida mae! :)

Jeje Pura Vida! :nice:.. well i will say to my brother to put in reverse then hehe..

Few nice points there, pity I have no garage to store my car in.

My tip would be DON'T put a cover on the car. It is far better to let the wind at it once you cover it up you start getting issues with rust ect.

Thanks man. Is that due to moisture etc getting underneath the cover?

Yes mate the cover will do more harm than good You can get really expensive 1s called touchless car covers But they are really expensive & have there own issues.

Myself I have a garage but still fear moisture So in the winter I use a Dehumidifier suck the moisture out of everything even if the car is soaking wet I really recommend it if u fear the rust :nice:

Im gonna be on holiday for 2 weeks.
Im not planning on doing anything to the car, its gonna be sat in the garage with the handbrake (e-brake) off.
Should be alright....
