Spoon 4 pots Issues

Morning All :)

I've got a 2000 ek9 Rx,
i've gone over to spoon 4 pots, but had issues en-route...

The calipers went on fine, but the seals on the master cylinder went during bleeding, so the mechanic changed my mc.
Now i have a pedal that feels like blamonge :'(

My Mechanic rekons the system is bled properly, so...

1) Are the ukdm Vti(96-00) mc's the same as the ek9(00) mc's (do they displace the same amount of fluid)?
Hence, have they put the wrong mc on there???!?!

If they have used the right mc, should i need to change the mc to a larger displacement, to get the right pedal feel?
(basically should the standard ek9 mc still give a good pedal on spoon 4pots?)

Has anyone else had these issues?

Cheers,
Tom

Yes. Your MC should be stamped with its size (in inches) it would be something like 1", 15/16, 7/8 , 13/16 etc... take a look and report back to us. Also did the mechanic bench bleed the MC prior to installation?

right, an update...

on the side of the m.c. lo the left of nissin we have "A" (in a circle), then "1" (in a circle with a dot in it), then "6".

this'd seem to be a 1"(blinx?),
hence, it should be more then fine?

I have the sneaking suspicion he either didn't bench blead it...
or...
(more likely having seen it) that it isn't a new m.c. at all!!
The cheeky f**ker:( * a least i haven't paid yet :p *

vti and ek9 dont have same m/c (ek9 is same as dc2 and larger), vti would work ok but changing to ek9 will greatly improve pedal feel

ek would be 15/16" ek9 would be 1" so either hes fitted the wrong one, or not bled it properly....my guess is the bleeding part

I carried out a 5 stud conversion on a friend's car lately and had the same symptoms as your describing, so I swapped another MC in to it and same result, turned out to be just lots of air in the system so was bleeding for ages.

get a proper bleeder and this isn't even an issue.

If he's still using the "2-man" method of pumping the pedal - you better stock up on more brake fluid for your mechanic to waste away for you.

x2

Had this issue changing to a 6 pot setup, all that was needed was lots and lots of bleeding after having the brakes stripped completely out of the car, brake lines and all.

You can do it the old fashioned way, but it'll take ages.

I just used the 2-man method and it worked fine!

one person in car operating brake pedal, the other out operating the bleed nipples, helps if you have the car up on 4 axle stands

pump the brake pedal a few times to build pressure and hold it down, open bleed nipple a 1/4 turn then quickly close it, once the nipple is closed then release the brake pedal.

repeat that a few times for each nipple checking the fluid resevoir level as you go

you will never have a super firm pedal straight away, go out and carry out the bedding in procedure once you are sure you have rid all the air from the system, should firm up to perfect after a little driving!!!

No matter how good you do the 2 man bleeding system, theres still air inside the system. You need a lot of vacumme pressure to push out air, and that amount of pressure will be determined on how hard you step on the pedal. As RA and I have discussed before, your just asking for a broken valve seal on the MC.

Get a hand pumping type(cheapest) and do it properly. Spend that much more and you'll save on the wasted fluids.

i got sick and tired of the soft feel as well even after going through 4 bottles using the 2-man method. I was skeptical about the pump until I used it. I was very surprised at how much air came out of the system even after the 2-man method.

Cant express how much difference it makes. Results speak for themselves.

Just remember to remove the bleed valve and give it a clean and use some teflon tape to ensure its sealed properly. Otherwise you'd just get endless air bubbles that looks like its coming out of the system when air is actually entering through the leak on the valve and back out of the system. Means its useless, and wasting fluids again...

ive always used 2 man method for several years ive had my car and been fine, guess ive been lucky, fluid is wasted but give each caliper several bleeds to be safe

guess i should borrow pump of someone one day though

How does 1 bottle per caliper sound? Never again!!! You'd be surprised at how much more air gets extracted even after a perfect 2-man bleed.

mityvac is best. You might be able to find some copies out there in the autoshops.
