What would cause the speedo to fail, but VTEC still works?

I was thinking back of the clocks? but everything seems in good order! Speedo seems to work then stop, then decide to work again, its a bit random on and off. No dodgy readings and can still get VTEC etc

Would a fault speed convertor cause this? If so where is it located?

Many Thanks

Ashley :nice:

clocks must be bad, or anything between the VSS and the clocks, if VTEC is working. R U 100% sure VTEC is working when the speedo is not?

Yeh VTEC defiantely works, definate kick and noise change when the high lift cam engages.

Seems to be fine then die all of a sudden, it didn't work untill I came stationary at the lights. Also noticed full lock affected it earlier :s

the issue must be between VSS and dash...fullk lock would tell me the issue is under the dash someplace, or the cocks themselves.

It will 100% be the kmh - mph speedo converter wired into the speedo pickup wire on the VSS on the back of the g-box.
Dunx

Defo a dicky VSS, mine went a bit funny after I drove the car through a flood, just cleaned it out with electrical cleaner and all was good. It's a grey connector IIRC, located on top of the diff housing.

I've narrowed it down to the speedo convertor, as if the VSS was at fault VTEC wouldn't engage. Dunc, I think you imported my car btw :D

Mine did, ran like normal just no speedo. Only threw a CEL on overrun bizarrely, couldn't figure out why that was.

Do the speedo converters often go faulty? Seems to be fine at the moment, just a slight blip last night when the speed dipped then came back on after a second or two

I also have the same issues but my speedo stops working and mine throws a check engine light, or both clocks do some wired clicking noise and then move and the whole car truns off?

YIKES! Sounds like an electrical short buddy. Get that fixed ASAP.

I've remade all the speedo converter connections and cleaned the contacts etc and still have the same issue on mine. Aquired another VSS and just fitted it tonight so gonna go out for a drive and see what happens.

I'm working on that issue going to buy a new engine harness and do a hot wire on it.

Something to do about fliping clusters, thats what i keep hearing ready to put on a usdm si cluster and take the stock tach in it and replace it with a stack tach that shows redline up to 12,000 rpm.

...its not like there is a difference in the cars voltage from USDM to JDM or UKDM. They are all 12v.

The VSS was swapped and the problem remained :( although i've only had chance to drive a few miles due to work commitments.

Next solutions are :

Remove speedo converter
Try different dials
