S4C Tranny shifting problem

I was yesterday at a 1/4 mile drag strip, and failed in my first test.

I launched good at 5800RPM, shifting to second gear without any problem, same with 3th gear, but shifting 4th..., I'm not sure what went wrong, but it felt like I went to 2nd by mistake, instead of 4th gear. Right away I pushed my clutch back in, and tried to shift 4th gear, without luck.

Only thing I can say is that I could hear like a grinding sound, so I crossed finish line in neutral.

After my car was at a low speed, with some effords I could enter the second speed.

I discover that if my engine is turned off, I can shift without problem. When my engine is running it is very difficult to shift between gears.

But if I hold my clutch down, and start the engine in whatever speed, I can drive in that speed without problem.

If Im driving and I want to shift it is very hard even to pull the shifter out of gears.

Had anyone had semilar problem in the past, and advice me, what could have been broken or damage so I can replaced it?

My engine B16B, tranny S4C all stock

Thank you in advance!

Yep sounds like clutch to me. Had a similar problem and it was the spring on the pressure plates that had sheared off.

You'll get loads of people telling you its the gearbox I'm sure but rule out the clutch first.

Have you checked the clutch?

Thank you, I have seen some older threads from other members with nearly same problem Im having, and it sound to be the clutch.

Now I am taking it apart, and as soon I removed my starter I notice that a bold on the presure plate is missing, and around the location is slightly damage.

I have loosen a peace from the gearbox, which covers the flywheel next to the oilsump, and there was a broken iron there.

I have not took the tranny apart from the motor yet, but from the signs I am collecting, I can conclude its the missing bold has loosen under heavy driving and cause some damage to the clutch system.

I will work on it later today and share my experience with my clutch problem

Exactly the problem I had, its pretty common - are you running an OEM clutch?

The tranny should be ok, there might be a few chunks out of the flywheel which if only minor you can get skimmed to ensure it stays balanced but if they're too deep you'll need a new one.

Its a bit of a relief when you realise its not the box/diff aint it!! :nice:

Keep us updated then and poss a couple of pics if poss.

Yes my clutch is OEM, I have now exactly 1 year I made this b16b swap into my EG6. I bought a complete engine with tranny and ecu.
I notice like the clutch and presure plate are unbranded. There is no name of any company on them. I have just ordered a new clutch kit from gripforce on ebay, they say to dealer of the major branded clutch kits, and I ordered a Exedy clutch kit from them as my engine is stock and I dont see no need to install a heavy duty clutch kit.

Pics are here!

x2 please!

Pics loaded, I am now waiting for my new Exedy clutch kit for repair

yes....i think it might be our clucth...hope to hear the update...

Here are updates with pic! :blinx: and yes, it is our clutch!
At the dragstrip, most poeple was telling me that my syncro's are damage.
But as we can see here, seems like the problem can be identify by the presure plate.

This pic of the presure plate shows the damage which cuased the shifting problem

well, there is your problem...lol

good that it was only the clutch ey?!

All things considered, you were lucky not to damage the gearbox! Having a bolt flapping around in there can cause much worse damage than that!

Glad you found the cause, must be a relief :)

Ideal result

(Other than having to do it in the first point I suppose.)

I would just make sure that there are no gouges out the flywheel cos that'll really throw everything out if its not skimmed and that means more stress/cash in the workshop!

Here is a view about my flywheel. It seems to be 100% ok

can you see the groove I am referring to when comparing the two photos? Compare the contact surface areas...that looks too deep of a groove for me.

...not trying to rain on the parade, sorry.

Do you think it is wise to sand the surface on the flywheel with sandpaper (500) before installing the new clutch??

i would have it resurfaced at a machine shop. thats like a $600USD ballanced light weight flywheel; sandpaper no.

Isn't it a stock ek9 flywheel? I can see it's a light weight flywheel and thought it's a common ek9 flywheel.

Ok I will remove it and have it resurfaced at a machine shop instead of sanding it my self

thank you for the advise! :thanks:
