oil cooling

My oil temps reach about 120 degrees after about 3 laps on track and I would like to go for a couple more before coming off to cool down.

Do I just get an oil cooler fitted or is there anything else I can do?

It's a b16b turbo.

Do well to last 3 laps before hitting 120 lol

Yes oil cooler would be best solution

Do you think a small one would do the trick? 13 row? I'll be getting a thermostatic sandwich plate. Would the oem cooler need removing/blocking off?

Haha. They've been on very cold and wet days which helped. Was at Oulton Park on tuesday and the rain didn't let up all day. Need to sort it before the weather gets better (touch wood).

No issues other than the oil temp ATM?

Nothing major yet. Only problem I have is the waste gate coming loose and I need a brace to support the weight of the turbo.

Normal road driving is a bit annoying as its a pain at low speeds, but get it on the track and it doesn't miss a beat. About to hit 160k miles too.

.

What grade of oil do you use?
A 13 row will help no problem as that is what i use on my car and oil temps dont go past 115 degrees after 10/15 mins on track.
The OEM cooler does not need to be removed or blocking off.

EDIT, what water temps are you hitting?

Murray

I use millers 10w40.

Not sure on the water temps but the gauge on the dials sits about half way at all times.

Good to hear no major issues. Mines only at 102k so hopefully I'll have the same luck.

i use a 13 row on my NA setp K20s. Takes a full 20 minutes before I get to 120C/248F, full on flogging at track. My coolant never moves once at temp.

whats your oil pressure???

a good oil like millers (nanotech) holds its viscosity very well until past 120C...

you need to know your coolant temps as well

:nice:

Coolant temps are best seen with an aftermarket gauge, the OEM dash gauge is a joke.

What manifold are you using? Cast or Stainless?

Cast.

Ill probably go for a 13 row one too. I just cant find any that come as part of a full kit including the thermostatic sandwich plate.

Oil pressure isnt suffering at 120-125 degrees. I stayed on for an extra lap during one stint and the oil temp hit almost 130 and the temp guage started to flash. When i came off to let it cool the pressure seemed to have dropped a tiny bit on idle.

I guess ill need to get another guage for the coolant temps.

You let it cool down on idle? or you did a few cool down laps then idled? What was oil pressure at idle?

I wouldn't bother with an oil cooler until you know what your coolant temps are doing first either

Second I would shield the sump from the exhaust manifold with some heat reflective tape

if you do that and have a good alloy rad with good coolant and you're still cooking oil then think about a little oil cooler

All imo

If you are going to hit the track more then an oil cooler will help.
As everyone else has said, the stock water temp gauge is useless, and I never understand why people use it with boosted motors.

As for "kits" try Speedflow. Might be abit more expensive than some, but its quality stuff.

I'll get a water temp gauge fitted. What temps should I be seeing?

I'll have a look at speed flow. Cheers.

I have my alarms set at 97 degrees for water...if the fans dont bring the temperature back down I would begin to take it easy and cool the car down, high gear and cruise at 60-70mph to maintain air flow

I've been warned about cast manifolds holding the exhaust heat and transferring this to the head/block. Could this be what's happening? Or just lack of oil cooler causing the heat issues? Tbh I'd run at 120 on track. But any more than that is abit much for me.
Fully synthetic oils can withstand around 140degrees apperently.
