How to tell 96spec from 98spec B18??

meh..just check the stamping on the head right where the header is normally attached.

There should be a few small circles and one of them will state the year it was made.

Of course there are unscrupulous sellers who might have bolted a later head to an earlier block.

Sorry, I didn't read correctly.

you can check out the Engine number on the block. This number should be the same as the blue chassis plate. The trick is, you have to find out which numbers were made from 98 onwards. So its 'B18C 1xxxxxx'

ya get you

but i was talkin more if the engine is already outta the car for a swap if ya know what i mean,,

cheers for the help lads

hope it will be of use soon:D

Yup, even if the engine is out of the car, you can still identify it from the engine number. 98spec has a specific number range as well as 96spec. The number on your engine shuld fall into the 96spec range or 98spec range. For example;

B16B
1003465
This EK9 engine falls into 97-98 year models.

B16B
1023454
This is in the 99-00 range.
