Have I put too much oil in?

Did an oil change yesterday with a new Hamp filter and Motul 5W-40 I'd left the engine running until the temp gauge leveled out and left it to drain for 20 mins til it was just a slow drip from the plug hole. I poured in 4 litres from the bottle (as per the manual) and checked the dipstick once the car was level and all appeared ok.

I then went for a (fairly hard) drive once everything had warmed up (didn't go over 5k rpm for about 15mins of steady main road driving) and everything seemed ok.

This morning I went out to check the dipstick and it's about 6-7mm over the top dot  I've gone back and checked the oil bottle and I must have mis-read the level as there's only about 900ml left.

Is the extra 100ml going to make much of a difference? or do I need to try and drain some off? Or now that I've driven it will it make no difference?

Id say youll be fone mate i serviced mine the last day and overfilled by a nice bit but cars driving fine and it will burn it eventually anyway! Does your car burn much oil on vtec etc?

I don't think it burns much, In the year since the last oil change I only topped up by less than 0.5litres as the dip stick level barely moved

As said a 100ml wont make any diference you will be fine mate honest if it was a litre there would be room for concern but anything under 300ml i personally wouldnt worry about it

After running it you would still have oil in the engine , sitting in the head and what not that wont not have had time to drain down properly. Is is possibly where the extra oil has come from.

sorry to put a downer on the situation but 7mm above the dot on the dipstick i would have thought is more than 100ML

I was under the impression bottom dot to top dot is 1 litre ??

Well I say 100ml because there's about 0.9l left in the 5l bottle so that's what I'm going by.

i would worry if it was that far over the mark. drain a little out. no point risking anything for the sack of 15 minutes of work to drain a bit out.

Right I've decided to play safe and just dumped 600ml (according to the old Mobil bottle i poured it into) out which has brought the level just under the top dot. I'll re-check the level tomorrow morning. Should be reet now, just hope there's been no damage done.

Even if it was enough to cause damage, I very much doubt anything will have happened within such a short space of time. I think you would have had to have done a fair few miles for the extra pressure to have blown anything. It probably happened because you checked it after running the engine. I've noticed it takes a few hours for the oil to fully settle to get an accurate reading. On that note does anyone know with these engines whether you should check oil when warm or when completely cold and left for a few hours?

Well the UK owners manual says to check the oil every time you fill up with petrol allowing a minimum of 2 minutes for the engine to cool.

Ok, so going on that and assuming your engine is warm, doesn't that mean that if you check it after leaving it for a few hours the level will show as being well over the max mark?

You'd have thought so, I've checked the oil before with a warm engine and barely registered anything on the dipstick. It's all a complete mind **** tbh

Yeah same here, and then leave it for a while and it will be up to the maximum mark. It is, I've never really thought about it before but just goes to show that sometimes even the basics aren't always straight forward
