Clean diet is the major key.....my hardest challenge!

Eating less isn't necesarilly a good thing as it can slow down
Your metabolism. Saying that if you're working out more and gaining weight then it's possible it's muscle, entirely possible!

The downside to putting on muscle mass but not being in a 'ripped' condition where you can see clear muscle definition-i.e as a generalisation you wont start to see abs until your body fat % is down between 8-10%. so muscle may well be there but being able to see it is where most of the hard work comes in!

Steady running elchunk? Slow- Medium pace runs for long periods (30-40 minutes). 3 times a week, building up to alternate days and longer sessions.

Anyone into running?

I do a 3 mile run on the treadmill or a 13k cycle at the gym every session (usually 3-5 times a week) as a warm up then an 60-90 mins roughly on my set routine for weights for that day. My main problem is my diet. I find it soo hard to eat clean and strict which is my downfall!

usually going to the gym 3 times a week. Start every session with around 15 mins on tread mill at ~7pmh (get bored running and sometimes get trapped air which makes the rest of the workout a balls!), then onto the cycle machine for another 15 mins or so doing a mix of high resistance at medium rpm and then a lower resistance at a higher rpm. then i usually start into the weights. If Im doing legs weights i do less cardio but most of my workout in upper body and torso stuff as that's where Im lacking atm.

I guess it's all about individual goals. Some people might just want to be fit,and to have a high level of cardio endurance.

My training plan is designed for my needs and thats all about strength and size. I want to get reasonably big in muscle mass, which isn't suited to everyone who works out and goes to the gym

If your trying to loose weight do more running. Nothing works better. Treadmills are crap though.

If you are rushed for time, do less weights.

I've always been told road running was bad for your joints, main reason i've stayed away from running is because i've a dicki knee and dont want to balls it up. would you recomment a cross trainer as a suitable substitute?

Running isn't bad for your joints, quite the opposite. But people can have pre existing problem with joints/ knees then it might not be good.

Depends what is wrong with your knee. Don't do anything that is painful or irritating. See a GP or Physio and see what they say. I'd recommend running over everything else but if not suited to you then cross trainer, cycling and swimming are the best alternatives (in that order). But will require more effort to burn calories, and cross trainer/ biking will build muscle as well.

Running is difficult to get into to start with but in the long term will be more enjoyable and more likely to stick at it, partly why I think its better than the rest. Cross trainers can seem very tedious after a while.

Running on concrete is bad for your joints! Cross trainer and running on track/grass Is gentle on your joints! Also the rowing machine works all your body and is a great machine! Strengthen your knees a lil by lifting light weight on the machines but running on concrete can cause problems in your hours in later life!

cheers for the info, just trying to get into shape and toned. My main problem is my diet (lack there of).

Disagree Dan.

It can be a strain but should not do any long term damage if you are healthy. Running is completely natural and people have evolved to be able to handle the pressure put on there joints.

@elchunk

Diet is always the hardest part...just takes up soo much time to eat healthy :((

It's a fact luck it up I got taught this on my gym instructor course the shock your joints get from runnin on a hard surfaces!
Running is really good for you to keep you fit etc all depends on what your running on!

Yes running on softer surfaces is better for you and running on concrete will cause greater strain. But it should not cause long term damage. Plenty old long distance runners who are pretty agile.

Just trying to say that people shouldn't be discouraged from running by statements that running is bad for you.

No it not bad for you at all if you have the right running shoes which are fitted in a proper shop it will make running more comfy and you will benefit more from it most old people who run will have the proper runnin shows if you look!

But no way running isn't bad just new to be careful and use the correct equipment/accessories

Started my diet the other day, going well. Eating like a champion and i feel great. Getting up in the morning and getting:

2 whole eggs, 4 egg whites.

about 10 am im banging a shake and banana

1pm 2 chicken fillets with 2 veg

4pm having a tin of tuna and shake

7-8pm depending on wether im at the gym or not that night id have Chicken Fillet steamed vegetables and sweet potato. If im at the gym ill bang some carbs when i get in like pasta or something.

10-11 pm ill bang a shake and some cottage cheese to work through the night.

This varies through the week, some nights it will be steak and broccoli etc.

P.S I've been taking double chocolate cookie PHD protein was getting a bit sick of it. Opened up the strawberry cream PHD and having it as we speak. HOLY ****, it is amazing. Seriously the nicest protein ive tasted. Cant wait to get up tomorrow to have another lol.
