EK9 - old Mugen N1 or new HSD MonoPro

I have a Mugen N1 suspension on my EKB20 racecar.
It's unknown how old the suspension is but i expect it's about 6 years old minimum.
It appears to be in good shape externally, no leaks and performs pretty well as far as I can see. It uses what looks like OEM top mounts on a short body with short springs (RG 18kg & 16kg's)

The question is, do I sell while it's in good nick (They make good money on ebay) and replace with a new HSD MonoPro suspension (12kg & 9kg's) or just play around with spring rates with what i have. What is better?

Can a new 1k coilover beat an old 3k coilover in terms of performance (Performance quantified by faster laptimes)

Can you still get replacement parts for the N1s? Incase anything breaks?

From talking to Chris in Mugeneuro a rebuild kit might be available.

What sort of dollar will it cost though, and will it readily be available?

I would probably go for the HSD's knowing spares will be available (somewhat cheaper too), as knocks and spin-offs are a possibility on track.

Havnt read into the HSD's, so dont know how they are performance wise.

If laptime is what you are after, I might be inclined to get those dampers professional valved for the car / driver.

Adjustable coilovers have a wide range of adjustments to meet the needs of the customers.
But if you are after lap time for a specific driver in a specific car in a specific track surfaces, then the goal is focus enough for you to get a damper professional build up for your needs.

I can't say it will be any faster, but at least you can build the suspension base on a specific focus... and that will be a better starting point.
But this will be expensive, as most of the cost will be in the vehicle dynamic design.

Otherwise, getting coilovers that are design for your needs (track use) will be a better idea.
That is assuming your car will not be used on the road, so you are free to use high springs rate with heavy damping.
I am assuming you will be using semi-slick or slick tyres.

Jerrick,

I was actually waiting on a set of SRV's to be ready and when there was no sign of them I guess I was looking at HSD's as another option. I'd known about the SuperRace but I thought it was a brand new design, not a re-valve of a Zeta-R with stiffer spring rates.

I'm more inclined to stay with the N1's for now as they are valved for the spring rates that they currently run. My issue is that they are getting old. A rebuild kit is available from Mugen though, without having to send the dampers to Japan.

In my application's case, I run a full endurance slick in the dry, a Yoko Advan A005.

I don't want a suspension that works for both the road and the track. To me that only makes me believe that I'm losing some track ability in a tradeoff between performance or comfort. I want an all out race suspension.

I have racing gear seeker coil overs with swift 16/14 springs on my ek9. Height and preload adjustment. There too hardcore for my car on the road. Would they be of interest to you? Theres pics on my build thread, still in very good condition.

To be honest, the HSD MonoPro at best can be compared to the MeisterR Zeta-R.
Suspension similar to the SRV that use precision made CNC piston is on another level.

With that said, no one know what is inside the Mugen also...
It might be the same as the Zeta-R, but until you put it on a dyno and open it up, you can only guess.

I drop you a PM, as I might be able to do something special for you.
But it depends on your budget and time scale. ;)
