Been looking for a cheap Civic for the missus for a while now since she's out of a job and had to let her MR2 go, and have just picked up an EJ9 for the princely sum of £75!! Obviously at that price it's got a few niggles, and hasn't got the best bodywork I've seen, but with a bit of work its definately got potential!

So, before I crack on with sorting the problem area's, I wanted to lay down some of the issues I'm not sure on in the hope that some of you guys might have come across similar issues before. Any help will be much appreciated!!

Here's what I've found:

1. The idle seems to shift between 1000 Rpm & 2000 Rpm at intervals of about 2 seconds. It climbs up to about 18-1900 as if you were gently on the throttle, and 2 seconds later drops as if the throttle had been released. I'm pretty sure this is related to the IACV but can anyone confirm?

2. Possibly related to the above, the on/off throttle response seems to be very snatchy. It's a really rough transition between being on and off throttle, jerks the car a bit. Would this be throttle body related also?

3. 3rd and 5th gear seem to jump out into neutral every now and then. I suspect the rear engine mount may be knackered from the amount of movement i feel through the shifter but can't tell until I get her on stands. Would a knackered mount lead to this or is there something else I should be looking at?

4. Gearbox is a little noisy with the clutch released and when in gear. No problems in feel with the box or clutch (other than the above). I suspect it may be bone dry in there (it'd been sitting for 2+ years in a garage before today) but is there anything else I need to be looking into?

Looking forward to getting stuck into these problems actually, always good to learn/try something new, but if anyone could point me in the right direction before I go blundering in there it would really help!!

answer to:

1. mine does this when it is cold, then when it is warm is doesnt do this. sometimes does it when warm but hardly ever!

2. not really sure about this

3. i only just noticed this after 2 years of owning my car. but it doesnt pop out on its own but when driving i can litterally tap it from 3rd to N. not 5th to N though.

4. not really sure what to say apart from.

give the car a real good service. engine and gearbox oil. sparks, oil filter. o2 sensor maybe. and anything else depending how thorough you want to be

does it look like its revving on its own? if it is my mate had this problem, he had to replace the throttle body as there was a faulty sensor.

There is a rotary type idle valve on the ej9 sometimes they can get sticky so if you try spraying some wd40 in it might solve the problem. Is the accelerator binding? As in can you feel it sticking initially when you press it down? Your best bet with gearbox would be to just get another, should be able to pick one up for small money.

Cheers guys. Vtec6000 - the accelerator is not binding, doesn't feel sticky at all. Just reall jerky even when you're as smooth as possible on and off...

For your accelerator issue, I had the same problem when I bought a second hand throttle body for my ek9. There was a small screw to adjust the butterfly and it had snapped off causing the return spring to slam the butterfly shut. This caused the throttle to be on/off when accelerating

for your first question. I can confirm that, I had idle fluctuation just one month ago. I took IAVC off the body and spray some cleaner, after doing this, put back on. the idle fluctuation gone.
