Drag Tips

yea my 60ft times are still at around 2.6 which defo needs improving.

I was launching at 4k revs, letting the clutch slip slighty, feathering the power in 1st gear then foot to the floor in 2nd gear. shifting at 8.9k revs each time.

yea changing to a 4.7FD and close gear set. There was an integra there that I honestly raped of the line both times, was atleast 2 car lengths away from then just before shifting into 4th he flew past me. He was running a 4.7FD.

Yea I kno the 1.6 is gona have way less power after 3rd gear but it seems to slow alot the minute I change into 4th so I am hoping the gearset will change that.

Nah stays in vtec all the time as my vtec is set at 5.2k revs.

Would have launched at a higher rev but my mate checkd my car on sat and I need 4 new front CV boots so was taking it easyish. I have only had the Yonaka driveshafts I got from Tegiwa on for about 6 months and thats them done already. NOT GOOD!!

Was it the black DC2? its a high comp b18, so i wouldnt worry to much about him raping you top end.
If it were me id leave the 4.9 final drive and put the close gearset in. See how you get on

Yea it was a black DC2, black wheels and carbon bonnet. was well tidy. think his name was steven. he was there with John Wilkie, had a good chat with them. Aw didnt realise it had that much work dont to it, aw well I done ok then considering I am running a stock B16B! :nice: lol

yea I thought about that but would that not be a bit extreme? with gear changing and stuff?

Aye thats him. Did they not say, or have i just put my foot in it :secret:

Id have to look at ratios and stuff, but after seeing that vid of the civic round the Ring, it went well. suppose itl top out around 120/130 ish but getting there would be alot quicker.

You dont need to change your FD its your 60ft... you can hit a 2.1 with an open diff, if you launch right, every 0.1 off your 60ft is worth twice as much off your 1/4 time, so if you hit a 2.1 thats a full second off your time... so a 14.1 which is quick for an ek9.

Once it grips in 1st gear you should be able to floor it, if its not gripping, you may have other issues, how are your bushes, engine mounts, shocks, alignment, what psi did you have in tyres and what tyres?

What 60fts are other guys doing? I've never raced at Crail but isnt it an airfield track?

Ernie, looking at my times i managed 3, 2.1s. Thats with an atb diff on T1R tyres.
Crail is an old airfeild and the grip is terrible.
Last time i was there, on an open diff the best i managed was IIRC a 2.2 that was on toyo 888. Its near impossible to get a 2.1 with an open diff and road tyres at crail.

I see... I raced at Elvington regular and the grip there is good for an airfield, have hit 1.9's before with LSD and drag radials.

It will be an uphill battle then, if you have poor grip... as b16's are weak at the topend, the 60ft is everything, only way to counter this is to shed some weight...

Yea he kinda touched on the subject but didnt go into any details. Sure he was running high 13s so it was quik but he couldnt get out of blocks anywhere near as quik as me

Yea thats whats kinda swayed me towards the short gears after seeing that EG as it was quik but there could be alot of other things going in his favour that made it so quik. I wouldnt care if my car topped out at 120 coz I am never gona be driving in that territory.

cool cool well I just need to keep practicing different techniques and see if I can get down to 2.1 or lower. a 14.1 would be mega but thats gona take alot of work and changes.

bushes are all basically brand new, few poly and hard race ones not long been fitted. engine mounts are innovative 60A ones with torque mounts removed and they still look in perfect condition. shocks are standard ek9 shocks with eibach springs. my mechanic checked over my car on sat and all was good apart from my CV boots. alignment aint been long set up by a specialist. I am running front buddyclub camber arms, rear D2 camber kit and rear D2 toe kit and its been adjusted to spec.

I have kuhmo ecsta tyres with plenty tread left. I took some air out of them so was prob running about 28psi. no way to kno for definite.

will need to check the 60ft times for others.

Yea as Murray has said its an old air field track and grip is shite!

Thats good well done Murray.

Whats the difference between an atb diff and an open diff? suppose I have an open diff?

Yea defo gona strip rear out totally next time and no passenger. my car has already went throo slight weight reduction as my car has no airbags, no electric windows, no electric mirrors, no ABS, no aircon, no torque mounts, de-cat, no parcel shelf, no rear speakers so to strip it of anymore weight would start getting crazy. but I will try my best as I really wana hit a few
14s.

Thanks again for all the help guys!:nice: :thanks:

You need to let more air out your tyres, keep dropping your tyre presure 2psi at at time until your terminal starts to suffer, then go up a psi and leave them, on road tyres, 20-22psi is normally the sweet spot.

Other option is just to drive to another track! The UK Honda drag series kicks off soon, events at York and Shakey, I gurantee you will run faster at a better track... My old delsol sir ran 13.8 with open diff, weighing around 960kg @ York and Shakey.

Perfect I will try dropping my tyre pressure by more thanks.

I would love to travel to another/better track but its fuel costs at the end of the day. thats a great time in your delsol well done :nice:

I will have a look at the links when I am home as I cant at work

Thanks again

So are majority of people in agreement 7k is ideal rpm to launch in a b16 ek9?

I think a lot of it would depend on the conditions and tyres. For example you could launch at higher rpm with slicks rather than poor road tyres. I've always found 3-4k to be a sweet spot if you feed the power in as you bring the clutch up. Managed to run 13.5 using this technique using r888's

Im running new parada spec 2 was launching slightly below 3 and best i managed 14.8 was pre-loading the clutch. Will have to try between 3-4 next time.....
