Drag Tips

If you like your clutch i wouldnt be doing this
I leave it out from the floor
in an ek9 you really want to be launching around 7k
Toyo R888 medium compound!

Its only for a few seconds, my clutch is fine after 30 runs in a day...?

Launching a 7k... maybe with 24" slicks, not on drag radials and def not on 888's which are a track tyre, and no better than a normal road tyre on the strip...

I ran 12.9 with a b18 EG, what times have you run? :)

i know someone running 13dead in a h22 eg but started with 16s

i also know a guy with a d14turbo that had never been on the drag started the session with 18secs and ended with 13.8 that won fastest 1400 lol
wonder what my eg b16a jdm will run .?

ColinD13 do you know the mods of the ek9 in that vid?

That ek9 in the video is launching perfect at 7k on 888's FACT!
No offical times ran in this yet waiting on upcoming events!

@thorburnlad :

Aem v2
5Zigen border 304 catback
blox extendable decat
s80 n3e (Jdm ctr 4th and 5th gear)
Standard Lsd

Still has standard manifold, standard ecu etc.

@colin the dc2 wasnt even close!
i always thought the ek9s were a lot slower than the integra

I dont doubt that pal, but launching on a drag strip is a different ball game to messing around on a night on the public road.

and for the record, spinning the wheels aint a perfect launch.. :)

Right had time to post my slip up at last and a couple of videos I took as well. Please give me any tips you can! thanks again!

Ok, seems you had a passanger for a start? Thats maybe 80kg extra weight which could be costing you maybe .3 depending what he/she weighs.

Your launch isnt that bad, but you need to hold the revs higher and preload the clutch, drop your tyre presures to 20psi, this will help. What size tyres are you running?

Whats your rev limit and what are you shifting at? You seemed to drop out of vtec on one of the runs 1st to 2nd, so you need to be shifting higher for def (unless that was a one off). Have you had your car on the rollers, do you know where peak power and torque are? You need to be shifting so you drop into or close to your peak area if you can.

There is a 14.5 in the car just with a good launch and and no passanger.

I've never raced at crail, so not sure how the grip is, but it seems similar to Elvington, which has good grip for an un prepped surface, you should be able to hit a 2.1 60ft, which would give you a mid 14 run.

Other thing to note is change gear faster, I nearly flat shift on the strip, I wouldnt recommend it straight away, but just practice changing as fast as you can, 3 shifts on the track so it all add up.

Yea passanger weighed about 10stone so she will be oot next time! lol

Cool will do thanks, tyre size is 195/45/R15

Rev limit is set at 9.2k as my car has been remapped on crome with a P30 ECU. I shift at 8.9k as that is where peak power is. Peak power was 206bhp and 134torque but the rollers will be reading a bit high so a bit lower than that. but I would have thought my 4.9 FD would boost my torque a bit? Yea I will maybe shift at 9.2 in 1st gear to stay in vtec:nice:

Perfect as I would be delighted with a 14.5:clap:

Crails surface is poor so I will need plenty practice!

Cool Ernie I will practice like hell on quicker gear changing and better launching! Much appreciated!! If I could leave more rep I would! :thanks::thanks::thanks:

Hope you get better times mate but as you said crail's surface is very poor. Total joke of a drag strip.

1.) its not that bad for a clutch as long as you know what you're doing

2.) its alot better to shorten the life of a clutch (though not by much if you do this technique) than to have a broken driveshaft and be towed from the track

Very interested thread!

Sharing my experience, My best et was 14.85 runing on 195/55/15" semi slicks tires @ 20 Psi launching @ 6K rpm with a 60ft 2.1sec and dumping the clutch, (ending 2X with broken axle)

I have a B16B engine swapped in a EG6 with a S4C box 4.4 FD

broken axle, ohh sounds bad! :( good times tho mate! might get back and give it another go sometime!

a frend whit ej9 and b18c4 swap s9b gear box full stock exept 60mm exhaust,no slick full interior 14,6 sec on 402m

broken axle, ohh sounds bad! :( good times tho mate! might get back and give it another go sometime!

Well I ordered 2 brand new axle 500hp capable and I have 2 more races to go for in Sept 10th and 24th. Right after these races, I will stroke the b16b to b18cr and be ready for new et next year.

you giving some good advice ernie!
try some traction bars too they goodive got some on mine and make sure your bushes are in good condition as when you get movement thats when you snap and break things.
and your 4.9fd is perfect for what you doing ernie is right

Cool cool, what axles did you go for? I will buy Mfactory ones in the future.
B18cr sounds good mate!:nice:

Yea I had a look at traction bars but for the amount of drag racing I do I couldnt justify the price! Alot of the bushes on my car have just been re-newed but thanks for the heads up!:nice:
Nice one cheers!

Well i was back at Crail yesterday, new personal best of 15.01 seconds but still dissapointed. Had about 9 runs and practiced different ways of launching and stuff. launches were excellent I thought but when I am shifting into 3rd then 4th the power just dips! :( not sure whats going wrong. The plan in the next 6 months is to swap out the 4.9FD for a 4.7FD and buy a close 3rd, 4th & 5th gearset and hope that helps.

Will put up my time slip and videos tonight so you can all look at my times and 60ft times.

Cheers

Looking at your times, your 60ft aint the best. you should be looking for atleast 2.3 secs odd. How were you launching?
Also changing your final drive from 4.9 to 4.7 will make your gears longer, or are you reverting back then trying the gearset?
When you say the power is dipping, is it only 3rd to 4th? Is it dropping out of vtec?

yea my 60ft times are still at around 2.6 which defo needs improving.

I was launching at 4k revs, letting the clutch slip slighty, feathering the power in 1st gear then foot to the floor in 2nd gear. shifting at 8.9k revs each time.

yea changing to a 4.7FD and close gear set. There was an integra there that I honestly raped of the line both times, was atleast 2 car lengths away from then just before shifting into 4th he flew past me. He was running a 4.7FD.

Yea I kno the 1.6 is gona have way less power after 3rd gear but it seems to slow alot the minute I change into 4th so I am hoping the gearset will change that.

Nah stays in vtec all the time as my vtec is set at 5.2k revs.

Would have launched at a higher rev but my mate checkd my car on sat and I need 4 new front CV boots so was taking it easyish. I have only had the Yonaka driveshafts I got from Tegiwa on for about 6 months and thats them done already. NOT GOOD!!
