im in the process of turning my power steering rack into a manual rack. im doing it the 'proper' way..by removing the rack and greasing it up/cutting the seal out. however....after removing the track rods, tie rods, and large nut on the end of the rack, the inner (stainless) part still wont slide out. any help? cheers lads.

anyone??
was hoping to get this fitted back to the car tomorrow...

You need to remove the black seal that holds the shaft in.

How would i go about doing that? and would it need replacing once the rack has been greased?

U need to hit it out, takes a bit of force... Use bit of wood or something so u dont damage the rack with the hammer....
Once out you'll have to cut off the metal seal. You can see a picture of this in my members ride.

just make sure itll go threw mot after,i did this to mine only i never took out the washer just stripped it off, greased and looped the rack and it failed mot

I have done a few now and found the best way is to press the inner out with a hydraulic press as it does take a lot of force and even had trouble when trying to hammer it out.

cheers lads... so it doesnt need replacing?...and once its out i just have to cut the hydraulic seal off the rack itself?

Can someone please confirm if the black seal needs replacing once the rack is greased or if i can just put it back together without it. Cheers

once you remove the rack itself from the housing there is a small nylon seal which you remove, you do not have to cut the metal disc off, just the nylon seal itself

when reassembling just put CV grease everywhere

done 2 racks like this and both have been ideal and no wear issues even with heavy track use

cheers steven. i was going to cut the metal disc off as this is what 2 people have done who's write-ups i have been following.

so i dont have to replace the black seal that was stopping the rack itself from being removed??

Yes, you need to put the seal back in. No need to replace it tbh.
