Hi sorry if I'm posting this on the ek9 forum, I just think this is the best place to get my answers because everyone is very knowledgable and cool!:nice:

I just want to know out of curiosity if anyone has any experience of turbo'n a D series engine? I would like to read a build up, see a vid, etc? I had a D15Z6 (ek3) before my EK9 and if I'd had the money I would have tried turbo'n it! dont know why, I just loved the car but in the end I thought the 9 was the best route and I havent been let down in any way at all!! :nice:

Thanks in advance!

my suggestion Rambo, get the SOHC out! Get it out, NOW!
dont get me wrong, if you turbo a SOHC it will out excellerate most DOHC engines on the quarter mile due do to the way SOHC engines build boost. but the rods and sleeves are paper thin, do if you put in too much psi or your boost controller does somethin wonky, your engine is dead.

you should get a DOHC. get it sleeved, use forged pistons, better cams, etc, etc...
i am sure that Blinx and Ek9turbo can tell you better than i.
good luck

Thanks for the advice Bucc-i! I dont have the SOHC anymore, sold it when I got my
Ek9. I was just enquiring about turbo'n a SOHC because I was curious! Thanks for the info mate!

meh.

Plenty of reliable 400whp SOHC Turbos out there.

mild formula off the top of my head include:
-Suzuki Vitara pistons
-B18B rods
-ARP hardware (rod bolts/headstuds)

SOHC turbo or not are great motors to play with. They are economical and in standard D16Z6 form, with some mild upgrades, they can produce as much power plus more torque than a 16A without the weight penalty and complexity.

Perhaps their only true downfall is their gearing choice - but MFactory has addressed that now :p

you can make a sohc fast, the limited revrange makes them frustrating to drive on high boost with large turbo's in my opinion. but you definately can make power with them.

as said earlier, a simple d series turbo kit will be just as fast as a say an oem B series swap if not a touch faster.

they love the boost  IMO the best motor for it.
im have a built D and i love it, if you do it right it will hold its own.

LOL.. What im saying is there inexpensive to build ,you can do it for under $1000, easy to do, and you can make a lot of power from 129hp to 300/350 or more i'd say thats that’s pretty good. I think That’s why you see so many backyard D builds.

Thanks for the replies. That site is great for info and pics, thanks RagingAngel! :) so the D16Z6is about the best engine to play with in the SOHC range?

Chet - Has anyone ever used the D15Z6 engine? Your Coupe looks sweet Chet, any photos and spec of it please? :)

many have used it.

Though the most robust OEM combo appears to be a D16A6 bottom end (due to its steel maincaps and well designed oil pump) along with a D16Z6 head.

The internals used are forged from fjt where he has recently designed a long rod to go with the Suzuki Vitara piston. This in effect brings up the compression ratio. A very good thing in my opinion.

whats the price on the long rod? how much does it bring up compression? Vitara pistons are cast correct? just beefier?

FJ Distributors

pistons are cast - they've done up to 400whp reliably.

Last I checked, somebody finally did the math properly and figured the Vitaras without the long rod made 7.5:1..the long rod gives it 8:1.

There was word that a new casting was being developed for a flat top Vitara or something with a shallower dish... Compression should be just a hair under 9:1...but I stopped researching there....that was last November.

wow! i am an advocate of low compression but under 8 is just stupid, im at 8.3 myself and that was just an experiment... zealautowerks says 7.15 for vitara's thats just too low!! If the new versions are 8:1 that would certainly be better...

OK, So i have a stock d series engine and i just did my outside everything i want my engine turboed but i have no clue were to start were i dont drop a huge amount of cash

buy a turbo kit, you might be able to find a used one in your local classifieds if your low on cash.

anyone who could help me and actually knows what there talking about would be great

Buy a used turbokit is the best option.

Expect to spend 2000$ or more for the whole setup :((
