carbon fiber roof

I have no idea, I will ask him tonight and get back to you. I know he is ordering the roof very soon or he may have already ordered it.

He is buying the roof separate and then getting it fitted elsewhere.

thanks mate could you ask him how much he is paying for it if use dont mind. its just so i have a rough idea how much it will cost

There is strength and strength tho! People seem to think that carbon fibre is some kind of magical material. Imagine you roll the car and hit a rock with the roof - what do you think will happen to steel roof and what do you think will happen to carbon? I have very little experience with cf in automotive applications, so take everything I say with a little more than just a pinch of salt, but I have been working in a bike shop for over 3 years and I have seen a fair number of shattered cf bike frames. I am yet to see a steel or aluminium frame that has shattered. Bent, dented - yes, but not shattered or worn through by a mud guard zip tied on...

hmm i see what you mean. when and if i get it installed i will get a X shaped roof strut put in for extra safety

Personally I would run a carbon fibre roof in a road car or without a cage, but carbon fibre is only strong in the direction it was layed up. In any other direction it is less than useless. This could mean unless the roof has been designed with this in mind then it would be shite in a roll etc. I really dont think i'd trust a homemade roof skin in a civic on the road with no cage the advantage of the weight saving wouldnt be worth the cost and risk.

you make a very good point. so whats my best bet then ? sunroof bung or try and find a oem roof without a sunroof ?

Id just install a bung buddy, far easier in the long run or even a good panel beater could probably fill it weld in the new piece and blend that into the current roof

already thought of that mate but if he blended it it might flex then just crack. im going to just leave the sunroof in for now and then look into when i put on the rest of my carbon stuff

id expect this to crack eventually even though its been welded as iv had a bonnet with filler in it crack, i would recommend just finding a standard roof skin without a sunroof and getting that fitted, from my experience carbon seems to deteriorate over time, it seems to go porous as iv had a carbon spoiler fill with water.

in my opinion oem would be the easiest and reliable option :nice:

Just get a roof skin from a doner car without sunroof.

Pointless spending all that money and then painting it!

yeah im just going to leave it and i was thinking carbon fiber because its strong and light...

im just going to wait and get a metal sheet put over it from an oem civic.. Cheers guys !

Carbon fiber is strong, but very brittle.
Stick with metal and cover it up. That is the best bet.

Without a cage, which would you prefer to have metal or carbon fiber, if this were to happen to you?

i see your point lol im guessing the carbon would just crack into pieces then ? sorry if that sounds silly but im not too clued up on carbon because i have never really liked it

Carbon fiber would not survive as well as metal in the above photo...

I replaced my top from having a sunroof to a DX top without a hole in it. I have been there already. Metal is the way to go on this part of the car. Carbon fiber is good on other areas like fenders or trunk lids, just not the top really.
