Hi there,

Basically im selling up and wanting to buy a ek9 type r, I went and had a look at one over the weekend and was impressed by the overall condition off it :) Although I didnt drive it and was in the passenger seat it just didnt seam as quick as what I was expecting!

My mates have ep3's and they say I may be comparing it to them as they're a 2.0l but i've began questioning weither or not the cams have been changed or something like that!

There was three of us in the car on test, would an ek9 be effected more by weight than the likes of an ep3? This may be a silly question and apologies if it is! I also have a picture comparing r cams to b16a cams and can see the difference but if i was to just remove the cam cover what would i need to remove to get checking the cams?

If anyone can point out any other method of checking cams etc, i seen that the b16b has max output rpm of 8200 compared to the b16a with 7800rpm but this is at top speed (i think?) so not really possible on a test drive!

Any help you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers.

There is not much power outside of VTEC which is at 6200RPM, I feel the power is pretty decent up there. It is a pretty light car so weight is definitely going to affect its pick up but I dont know how much more or less than other specific cars. No help on the checking of the cams and I dont know who is selling it but I have a feeling they would be iffy about letting you open up their engine. Maybe this can help a little, its a dyno of my stock b16b running a PCT ECU.

Note the engine revs to 9000RPM and WHP rises all the way up. I dont know why the dyno didnt read all the way up but the slope of the graph is correct.

Drive it through some twisties and it will make total sense!

The stock ek9 rev limiter is 8400 and will only look like 9000 due to the tachos not reading 100% accurate.

With 3 people in the nine it will begin to feel a little sluggish but should still do pretty well.

Think you'd need to drive one yourself really tho. Passenger rides are good but it's not the same.

Thanks for the reply,

Yea I noticed that before V-tec its quite slow and I expected that, and yes v-tec came in around 6200 just as you said. I think the weight may have had a big role to play IN it, it also doesnt help when im coming from a diesel bora with 230lb-ft of torque lol. I think I'll need to go have another look take it a drive with just the two of us in it and see how it pulls.

I know and neither would I! I just know if I bought it and had any slight suspicion i'd probly have the cam cover of within a day and want to be checking it!

Cheers.

They ain't a fast car in a straight line - nippy yes.
the 9 is a brilliant involving drive though..
If you want to be pushed back in your seat its the wrong car for you as theres no tourque.

Just as you say its not the same being in the passenger seat! A second visit and inspection it is then.

Is there any other things to look out for common faults etc that I may have missed?

It is a 1600cc. So don't expect thrilling straight line pace, esp with 3 people in it.
The corners is where the ek9 rules.

the ek9 is no rocketship, but they were made for twisties so get yourself out on a track :drive:
