So I'm looking at getting into the motorbike scene, keeping the car as well of course :D Thing is though, I wouldn't know as much about them as I do cars. I'm in the process of getting my provisional licence(Irish), and I'm just wondering what bike I should go for as my 1st, where to go for lessons and basically any tips on getting started that you can offer me :)

I had a 50cc moped for 2 years when I was 16, that's about the extent of my motorcycling career :naughty:

I'm also curious as to what I could be looking at insurance wise. I'm 23 living in Dublin.

The bikes that I've been looking at are:

1. Yamaha YZF R125
2. Honda Hornet CBF250
3. Kawasaki Ninja 250R (bit expensive though)
4. Honda Bros 400 (would prefer something more modern)

Basically you can consider me an absolute newb, so any advice would be very much appreciated :D

:thanks:

CBR600 restricted :nice:

That would be sweet, but probably a bit heavy for my 1st bike? I'd be afraid I'd bin it... :(

Yamaha Fazer fzs 600 are a great starter bike and you cant go wrong

Ye not a bad bike, but I'm looking for something a little smaller height wise and more of a sports bike...

aprillia rs250 ?
honda nc30 ;)

Are the Aprilla Rs250 learner legal? I thought they would be too high an output with it being such a revy 2 stroke?

for a start you can get insured on any size bike if your willing to pay for it... most insurance companies rate 125cc,250cc and 400cc as the same insurance group but from 600 up it gets more expensive. Also some insurance co. have the same insurance price for a standard bike compared to a restricted one as this was the case when i was getting my bike insured (gsx-r 600) so make sure to ask for both prices. But on the other hand some companies will only take restricted bikes so ring around them all. As far as i can mind it was €800 on the cbr400rr with a provisional when i was 20 and €1900 on the gsxr 600 with the same licence at 21, with a full licence then it dropped to €1100(still 21) so it wasn't to bad considering my age. And as for the weight, my first bike was a 1991 cbr400rr and my next was an 2007 gsxr 600 and there wasn't much difference in them and even my bike compared to my fathers 04 fireblade is pretty much the same aswell so don't worry about the weight of big bikes.
so my advice would be stick to honda or suzuki and try and get as fresh a bike as possible depending on your budget as newer bikes are lighter, faster and easier to ride which is the main one. hope this helps

Get something like a Suzuki Bandit.. Quick enough that you won't get bored after 5 minutes (like you would on a 125) but not quick enough to kill you if you stab the throttle abit hard..

i`d suggest some S/M motorcycles, like the yamaha XTX, honda FMX and the likes. Are more playful and a really good school than bandit and similar OLD bikes.
i just took a better look at what you`re looking at... don`t get anything that`s a scooter with a fering and a clutch (YZF R125 etc). You`ll get bored quickly and don`t have any fun at all.check out the honda CB too.

Don't bother with a 125 mate you will soon get bored!! Your 23 so go and do your direct access lad... Get something like a 600.... cbr600 rr is a very good bike and is quite forgiving on corners and easy to ride! I own a zx636 r and i love it! Best thing i ever did was my bike licence and no car can give you the same buzz as a bike!! And if anyone tells you a 600cc sportsbike is to fast for you remember the bike will only go as fast as your right hand turns the throttle..

Go for a modern 600cc superbike. Your safe with any of the 'Big 4'

Suzuki GSXR-600
Honda CBR600RR
Kawasaki ZX6R(R)
Yamaha YZF-R6

They are all pocket rockets and similar weight etc. I have owned a GSXR, ZX6R and R6 and ridden a few CBR600RR's all great bikes.

Have a sit on some and get something your comfortable with.

Thanks for the advice lads :nice:

I'll look into getting a CBR 600 so, hadn't even thought about something like that as I thought I'd be laughed at when it came to insurance etc.

Really appreciate the advice. Sound :D

Most important of all is GEAR. Don`t go anywhere without your gear. At least helmet and jacket even for the shortest of distances!

I know from even moped experiences that this is the case, I'll be kitted out in the finest mate don't worry  :)
