My gearbox (s4c with m factory 4.9) is whining quite abit.

I can only here it in 3rd gear and upwards, and the noise gets louder and higher pitched with more revs.
It might be whining in lower gears I just can't here it because the exhaust is loud.
I'm pretty sure it's getting louder and louder, haven't checked gearbox oil yet as I'll be opening the box soon but it isn't hard to select the gears and they work perfect.
Noise either goes or it isnt as loud when I lift off.
Any ideas? Would like to get which ever part it is ordered befor I open the box up.

To give you an idea of the whine it sounds like its supercharged, I can only hear it part throttle because the exhaust drowns it out otherwise lol

Just been out again.
Its ther in 2nd can't here it in first but I think that because of the exhaust. When I lift the noise is still ther but not loud at all, if I hit the clutch the noise stops straight away.
Input shaft bearing? Or something else?
Also noticed I have a noisey clutch release bearing aswell.

Mine whines 3/4/5 but that's due to mfactory ratios in the box :)

After driving it again its more pronounced from about 30mph onwards.

Do you think my final drive would be making this kind of whine?
It's 4.9 if that makes any difference?

Could be final drive, when you install a gearset there is a noticeable whine, make it feel more race spec ha lol

Well that's put my mind at rest, the gearbox is great other than the whine. And if that's just the final drive then happy days!
Thanks guys

Did this sound happen soon after the box was built with M-Factory 4.9? Was anything else replaced?

I don't know I bought it already installed. Civic typer89 build/had it built

When the final drive was installed was the input shaft bearing replaced?
Dunx

sounds like a bearing to me, if it gets louder with speed it's more likely to be the output shaft or the diff bearings. I would be a bit concerned if the actual gears were whining, especially if they are helical cut gears

Final drives whining could be just where the FD has not been lapped in during manufacture if its an aftermarket one, its not a straight cut sound or supercharge but a poor mans version of the two

Mine (different aftermarket FD) whines in 3rd gear onwards, it actually whines from 1st but like the OP the exhaust drones it out so is hard to make it, it comes on song in 3rd, deceleration is much much louder

I just live with it but I actually like it :))

Yeah it's like a mild supercharger whine.
I think it's okay. But I'll be opening the box soon anyway so I'll have a snoop about then.

The reason why my one (non m-factory FD) whines is because its not been lapped in and also there is about 10thou backlash on the crownwheel hence why it's more vocal on deceleration than acceleration, trying different oils and putting mileage on it is supposed to quieten it down over time but it doesn't

Unless something is blatantly staring at you thats hanging off when you take the casing off your not gonna know if its been lapped in or not, could try asking last owner or m-factory themselves if they know

previous owner says all is fine.
say i leave it as it is. whats the worse that could happen?

I feel a Dr Pepper theme tune coming along... :D

Its not harming your gearbox just your sanity, if the previous owner says the whine only happened after the FD was installed and all the gears were engaging fine beforehand and there's no crunching and no vibrations coming through the pedal and thats still the case then that's all it is, so the worst would be you never get used to the whining sound

Do a search for other FD's on here and see what they come up with but more often than not the whine only happens when aftermarket FD's or gears are installed

Yeah I'm not to worried about the noise now I know what it is lol
I don't drive the car much so it helps add to the ek9 experience lol
