Does anybody know if i can fit a VTEC controller to my ek3 its a d15z6 if that helps cheers
Yea they kick in late. .................. still waiting on it to kick in on the "other halfs" ek3 and she has had it about 4 years!
The EK3 VTEC-E is different to B series VTEC,the engagement point depends on vehicle speed, revs and engine load, so there is no set crossover point like there is with VTEC. Also, the cam profile only changes on the intake cam and all it does is that it opens both intake valves fully rather than only one fully and one partially, which is what happens when the car is off VTEC-E. This allows for lean burn and improved efficiency, which results in lower fuel consumption. So while the D15Z6 is technically equipped with VTEC it is no faster than other D15 engines, just more economical. Also, you say the VTEC kicks in late - this is not true, the highest RPM the VTEC-E will kick in is 3500 rpm in 5th gear!!!
So, all you'd achieve by fitting a controller would be removing all the benefits (low fuel consumption and emissions) and gain absolutely nothing. You might as well get a non-VTEC D15 then, as it will have the same effect. Also, I'd be worried that if you raised the VTEC crossover point to say 5000 rpm you might destroy the engine, there is a very good reason for Honda not allowing it to run lean at high RPM!
Best option is a b16a cheap conversion these days
vtec controllers are a waste of money, you'd need to have the car remap'd to alter the vtec point properly and adjust the A/F ratio to suit it.
You will be able to buy an EK4/9 sooner if you stop spending money on the EK3 lol. Honestly, I understand why you want to mod it, I got the bug myself, heck most of us do. But I wouldn't bother with the EK3, keep it clean and well maintained and just enjoy driving it. The car is nippy enough to be enjoyed for regular driving and the fuel consumption is very good. I'm thinking about buying another one as a daily, I loved my old EK3!
