Very low MPG, constant smoking at idle and running.

Im sure thats expensive for a cap and rotor, I got mine from oemjapparts.com and it wasnt anything like that. £32.99 for a cap and rotor from them, genuine Honda parts too! You get the rubber seal, and screws to bolt it up. Just sounds expensive to me.

cheers for the heads up hornetsting, when you put it like that, yep it does sound expensive lol
but oh well its done now :) didn't know about that website till now either.

cheers,

Dan

thought id just comment here, hopefully new cap n rotor shud sort it man. if not im outta ideas

Well cap and rotor have arrived at Honda, off to get them shortly :)
And cheers EJ88, appreciate your ideas and suggestion :)

After new cap and rotor if it's still giving trouble I would be looking at the internal ignition coil of the distributor.

Right I've just changed the cap and rotor, old cap was cracked slightly and there was quite a bit of brown dust on the arm and where the arm meets the actual distributor.

I've cleaned all that off, and removed the plugs, which were absolutely black as can be, cleaned them up with a wire brush and put them back in.

Started up fine, and engine light has gone, but real test is what it does once its being driven, going out to try it now.

I've also done a video to show that when I do the diagnostics test, nothing comes up, just a constant CEL light, so frustrating.

I think the cel lite always come on wen u do the diagnostics test, itll only flash if it finds a fault

Cheers for that ej88, that was my understanding too.

Ok well this is what happened yesterday, as posted on itr-dc2 forums :)

Right it all appeared rosy, I drove to a friends after fitting the dizzy cap and rotor arm, and cleaning the plugs, but it still didn't feel 100% right, was odd, but engine light had gone.

Then went to get in it to come home tonight, got to the end of his road, and it started hesitating and juddering again, but this time I saw a flicker of the battery light... aha ... then the engine light came on, turned right back to my friends house and popped the hood.

Checked for error codes and still nothing came up!

But sure enough I could smell that same burning smell I've smelt the whole time, I got a torch and checked the battery, looked ok to begin with, then shone the torch down the side of it, and there was all this white stuff coming out of it, and had obviously been coming out for a while as its stripped the battery holder of its paint.
Leaking battery acid.... I think I may have found my culprit.

Sadly had to leave my car at a friends house, but hopefully Honda will have a battery in stock tomorrow I can take over there.

I actually can't believe I've only seen this now, I really hope its whats causing this problem, as there still no bloudy engine codes being stored on the ECU.

Will let you know how I get on with this.

oh and on a positive note... ABS is working again was water ingress on the relay, all sorted now

Ok well got a brand new battery from Honda (for reference they are the same price as one from Halfords), £63 and apparently always in stock at dealers due to the new Civic using the same battery.

And well the car is behaving as it should, drove beautifully, and hasn't missed a beat since.

fingers crossed this is what was the issue :)
