To de aircon or not to de aircon...

what do we think?

In the final stages of preparing for my high comp b18 to go in. I have a half width Blackworks rad and fan at the moment. I would think it would offer sufficient cooling? I'm also going to be running a Setrab 19 row oil cooler.

I was thinking of removing aircon though to go with a full width rad instead, but do they really make that much difference? I don't really use the aircon but it might be annoying still having a A/C button inside that does nothing... I'm unsure... Lol Help!

I would bin it, it's just clutter

I wish mine still had aircon.... purely because i have the button and now it doesn't do anything. Thats my 2pence worth haha :)

lol 1 vote for removal and 1 for keeping...

That's exactly what I'm thinking Bushell, I'll have a button that does nothing... But I don't use the aircon much anyway. Prefer opening the windows. Decisions.

There are benefits I guess, it looks better and it saves weight. How easy is it to remove?

Just down to personal taste i guess. I like my creature comforts etc, but if you building it for track days etc then you may as well rip it out. A button thats there but does nothing is better than a button blank. I hate blank spaces in dashes. Does my head it haha

If you have the engine out you will have plenty of room to work so it'll take no time at all to remove. It's pretty self explanatory once you start

I suppose! It is being built for some track fun so I suppose it'll be worth it.

Ok I'm sure I'll get my head round it, how do I go about getting it de gassed? Presume that's the first step in removing it?

Haha yes Jesse I think I will now ;) I have no ABS already :D or TCS... I do like my PAS though

I believe your supposed to take it to a garage and they suck it out iirc.
Harms the environment, I have in the past stuck a screwdriver in the valve. But you shouldn't do that really.

You can get it de gassed at any garage that does a/c re gassing, or just slightly loosen off a joint in the system and let it leak out slowly

The problem with using a screw driver is you end up breathing it in a bit to much

Oh alright lol. How much is that then? I will avoid killing the world I think ;)

Is a full width rad really necessary? I will de aircon but it's whether to put a full rad in or not.

I noticed that even with full width rads, people are only running a fan on one side? Defeats the object a bit? Also it may be easier to locate my oil cooler if I stay half width? That's another headache I'm having.

I only run a half rad, it's been ok so far.
Was expecting to over power it but that hasn't happened yet.

I've gone for a full width, a bit overkill some may say.
A good half width will be fine with a good fan, a properly functioning thermostat and water pump

Yeah full width is no doubt better than a half.

I just saw your half rad in your thread aye. I quite like my Blackworks one, seems to do the job fine whenever I thrash the car so...

I guess I will just remove the air con and run with the half, see how it goes then maybe get a full later on.

Also noticed them pipes coming out your cam cover, are they necessary? Noticed that whiteman had them on his...? They like breather pipes or summot?

Breathers yeah. Look abit gash but needs must.
Probably not on an N/A but I was getting a fair bit of crank pressure from the turbo conversion.
I had two ports in the rear of the block but it was pushing the oil up and into my catch can.
Made a drain back system now so shouldn't get that problem again.

Get rid of it, it also means you can remove the whole heavy front torque mount etc once you got some decent engine mounts (or spend £10 on a tub of Tiger seal like I did...). For me it was 2 things - weight and also clutter, I like to have space around my engine, makes working on it so much easier. As Jesse said, ABS should be your next target lol.

Ah yeah ok. So I won't need them then?

Aye I've got innovative 60A mounts for it so the front torque mount can go. I will remove the aircon then. Seems that only good can come from it.

I don't have ABS anyway as I said before so that is already done lol

Probably not mate but some seem to do it anyway.

Personally I'd leave it in. I was absolutely dying on track in the middle of summer last year, especially on the stricter tracks with long sleeves! I dont know if having a black car makes it worse but it was absolute hell and I was regretting binning it so much!

I've also only opted for a half rad so I have space for turbo and oil cooler :) not too worried about only having a half as I've got a decent one!
