hey guys as I cant insure my vti-s its getting made into a track car ( and also cause I killed my impreza LAWLZ) But with my corsa... being a corsa, and been offered an ek 1.5 vtec In good condition for good moneys im seriously considering it. what are peoples thoughts on these ? mpg and acceleration wise. not expecting a b series pull but I want atleast a reasonable pull to 70. been looking around parkers, on google but wanted to get some fresh opinions :) and also with a set of coilys and my keskins on it it'll be smaaart:) cheeeers.

Depends what model you get..you can get a Eco model and if you drive it sensible you could get decent mpg I have owned one but the day I got it I put my b16 in but the pull ok for what it is..my other halfs 1.4 light weight model gets exellent mpg and pull surprisingly well..lol

the 1.5 civic (ek3) is an excellent all round car!! you wont be dissapointed. I had one for 2 years and my mate cal had it before me for about 2 years and it never missed a beat!

Hi mate I have one .
For daily driver it's an excellent car (really cheap to maintain and trouble free) .

Depending on driving conditions expect fuel consumption to be between 4.5l/100km and 8.5l/100km (I get 7l/100km) .

Also the acceleration is ok until 140~150 km/h but once you pass that it is just to slow .

Same here mine was on 120k when i sold it but spot on is great starter car dont expect bseries power but is spot on for cheap motoring

I had an ek3 as my first car, it got great mpg and wasnt bad on acceleration, what lets it down is the very long gear ratios. If you changed it out to another d series box you might benefit the acceleration.

but mpg wise it can run on just 12 valves as its sohc under light throttle and under 3,5k ish rpm, which gets 40+ mpg i found. Its a pretty sweet engine tbh, 114 bhp on a sohc 1.5 which gets great economy.

Also all ek3s come with 262mm front brakes and front arb, where as the 1.4 pre facelift ej9s have 242s and no front arb usually.

I used to have one and if I was looking for a new daily I would buy it again. It is nippy enough for overtaking and if you drive it sensibly ( e.g. when the green light on your dash is on) the fuel consumption is really good! And being a Honda it asked for nothing but regular service!

EDIT: Re: Dannyboy - Yeah the gearbox is long, you can do 70 mph in second gear! But I would leave it as it is if you want is as a daily... It works well!

I owned one for a few months, MPG was excellent IMO and the power was nice, it got easily to 70, the gearboxes do let them down though but they are there to improve economy, also the green light on the speedo is a nice touch, gives you a nice game to play :D

Ye suppose it keeps the revs low, you could keep the eco light on until nearly 80 mph.

hmm sounds tempting now, especially now ive seen it, its been resprayed so is fairly tidy minus a red boot coz the windscreen got panned on its blue one :( 400 bucks with 4 months mot no tax 100k on clock coilys and some irmy softstar look a like 16s with decent tyres? I just need to throw a water pump in my corsa then decide! be hard going from an 05 to an S plate but tbh Id rather the civic haha cheers guys

my 1st civic was a ek3 and gota say fuel wise was bang on and its nippy for a sohc also cheap to run

The EK3 is a fantastic car - I use mine as my daily driver and keep the EK9 for weekends. :D
I have owned it for the past 7 years and it was my Fathers before then and he owned it from 1 year old.
No problems whatsoever, passes MOT every year without fail and the MPG is great if you drive it sensibly - I went to Essex last weekend and did 435 miles in total on £55 worth of petrol, worked it out to be around the 50 mpg mark - kept it to around the 75 mph though for most of the journey.
Fairly quick car for a 1.5 as well.
You cant go far wrong really. :):drive:

I've had 2, good cars but the gearboxes are poo on them put a hole in both of them just launching off in a drag, could have been down to me being 17 and not a clue about driving, one of my ek3 was dynod at 145.7bhp and kept up with my mates punto gt turbo. But it looked liked a cadburys fruit and nut demo car haha
