There in Fast & Furious.

Enough said.

But in seriousness, They are expensive, But also they hold their value and I personally love them. Personal choices. A different FIA approved harness will do exactly the same job as mentioned though.

If Takata were THE BEST everyone in motorsport would be using them and not Schroth, Sabelt or other brands. I am not questioning the quality of their product but I would not pay extra for a different colour and ''JDM'' points. I only buy genuine high quality parts, but that does not mean I must buy the most expensive stuff available either. If Seb Loeb trusts Sabelt I can't see a reason why I wouldn't. But the price always depends on demand and as long as there will be people willing to pay the extra for the brand they will be charging the high premium. And frankly - Why wouldn't they?

To the OP I can see your point, but you must also realise that your point can be applied to many things in the car scene. Same as saying why pay for TE37's when you can get Rota Grids. You pay for the original 'JDM appeal'....but also the world renowned reputation, the culture and the quality of appearance in the flesh. Both wheels pass all the standards required to use on the road but Id know which ones Id pick if funds allowed!!! (Rays>Rota)
Same applies for an ee9 i-vt in the UK compared with the price of an EF9 SiR from Japan......somebody with the same mindframe as you would be thinking WTF is the difference like? But then there is others like myself and other all around the world who appreciate the EF9 for what it is and realise its worth, ability to retain value and culture in Japan.

I see where your coming for but its not a hype its paying for a quality JDM product, people differ.... you may wanna go buy a corbeau seat but Id rather fork out for a recaro or bride seat, as Im into Japanese cars, not euro cars and want to keep my modifications or applications in line with that format.

(PS I know Recaro originated in Germany but still is most commonly found in Jap cars)

Not really.

rota is a straigh out copy of volk racing and other brands.

TRS, Sabelt etc are not takata copies.

and you said it yourself the original "JDM appeal" = scene kid hype.

how many of the 100's of UK street hondas with takatas fitted actually even use them on track??

PS- not a dig or anything just stating that over 80% of the reason as to why we see takata harnesses in cars in the UK is for scene points. Fact.

I think as said, other FIA approved harnesses will equally do the same job. End of the day guys, we will never be able to use them to their full designed potential even in our track Honda's i.e crash at over 180mph+, therefore it matters little which brand you use. If installed properly they will all do their job

JDM point? Maybe, as no other well known FIA harnesses are JDM (that I know of)!! I don't buy scene points myself.

Worth paying the extra? If the cash is burning a hole in your wallet, go for it!

Is it the superior numero uno harness in the world? No.

The exchange rate doesn't help these days, back in late 90's to 2000 they were more in line with prices of other brands.

I see you highlighted the one point I had in my first post in inverted commas... I said that as I acknowledged it was mentioned earlier in the thread....and agreed it is also was a small factor for some people buying them, there are also other factors which I mentioned. I think I proved a more valid point with the rest of my post though when you compare UK models to JDM models. TRS and sabelt are not copies no but simply a cheaper alternative. Go buy a set of compomotive alloys instead of new set of WORKS or Volk Racing alloys. Different strokes for different folks. With regards to citreon using sabelt, a lot of that would be down to sponsors etc and keeping them closer to home. TAKATA is more used in the JTCC. All top of the range harnesses in this day and age can be expected to do the same quality of function in the event of an accident, thats a given. But prices will vary due to form, marketing , testing and actual materials used in the product. I do agree that they could maybe reduce their prices slightly, but then again who are we to judge, they obviously already have a prosperous market and sales revenue annually.

TAKATA

When the first Japanese Grand Prix was held at the Suzuka Circuit in 1963, only half of the racing cars were equipped with seat belts and it was commonplace to see ambulances racing to the scene of each crash. And at that same time, ordinary cars on the road were rarely equipped with seat belts. Then, in 1964, Takata developed Japan’s first full-harness seat belt. The Subaru 360 that participated in the second Japanese Grand Prix was equipped with a complete Takata safety harness.

In 1996, Takata developed the Multi Point Buckle (MPB), a full harness designed for the DOME CO., LTD., F1 racing car made exclusively of parts produced in Japan. This harness was designed not only to ensure the driver’s safety, but also to supply driver comfort and help minimize fatigue. The MPH was adopted for use by GT, CART, FN, and F3 formula racing cars. Its combination of safety and winning edge technology has won acclaim from motor sports drivers worldwide.

In 2005, Takata started supplying its MPB-020 harness, which incorporates the latest advances in technology, for use in F1 races, the pinnacle of motor sports. The following year, Takata introduced the MPH-341 full harness. This sophisticated harness was made possible by incorporating state-of-the-art technologies gained from F1 racing in a product available to the public. Features include a small and light buckle and significantly better ease of operation and durability. Along with these improvements, the MPH-341 retains the same attributes of its predecessor. For instance, the harness has 3-inch-wide twill webbing that is flexible yet sturdy and a lightweight adjuster that is easy to use.

Overall, this full harness has earned a reputation among race car drivers for excellence in terms of both safety and winning performance.
Takata is dedicated to supplying motor sports fans in Japan and other countries with even better products by using the feedback of leading race car drivers to make more improvements.

Another point also which is overlooked, the top of the range schroth and Sabelts are the same price from reputable dealers over here...i.e. the ones to which were designed to compete directly with TAKATA's version and be used in similar motorsports. Do you think you would buy a Sabelt harness thats used in proper Rally car for under £300-450 quid? Definately NOT!

Yes there are cheaper versions for £100-£150 which will suffice the average user. TAKATA obviously doesnt supply for the low end of the market. They supply top end and thats it! If you just want the 'look' go buy fakes or 'run of the mill' sabelts. If you want the Best go for genuine TAKATAS or Top range Schroth etc.

JDP is not suggesting takata have made 'hype' harness'.. He's fighting the 'hype' directed at them!
Also a JDM queen shouldn't be pointed at and be disrespected, what's wrong with buying something because it's JDM, one of the main reasons our cars are so special is because there JDM! 
My two cents :))

I think takata's are well over priced, colour is down to personal taste.
Yet people buy them because it is a top of the range product and it is down to takata to set their prices.

It's the same principles why Armani are seen as top quality fashion, and set high prices for their garments when you can easily purchase another item elsewhere which looks just as nice. People buy it for the name and be recognised for sporting the good stuff.

You can purchase other makes of harnesses but it's down to what car scene your into, as mentioned before, most jap cars modified with brides an Recaros. And euro cars like vw with corbreau seats.

You can say that takata's are seen as the cool kids around the block and i wouldn't say they are the 'best' but they are very highly rated.

This can be applied everywhere, iPhone vs android phones. Alot of would argue that the iPhone is the best phone about. And some will say its overrated. Down to personal opinion, and those who thinks the iPhone is overrated will go buy an android phone, which will do the same job as an iPhone.

Everything in life is about the supply, demand and quality.
The same reason why you'd shop in superdry/g star/armani over primark :/

this is an interesting read.

i know last years Sauber F1 team had takata's.

i personally have them, but i got them cos they match my wheels.

going back to the whole rota's and rays, my friend has the super advan racing 3 spoke wheels and his brother has the rota copys, and the rotas actually weighed less.

Super dry is another "lets slap on some JDM tax" product and is designed for small Japanese guys

At the end of the day the whole jdm badge thing is just nuts and Takata is just another example.
The saftey argument doesn't wash with me at all I'm afraid. For one I've seen them installed in ridiculously unsafe manners (lap belt anchored to bolted seat rail, should straps anchored to c-pillar bars etc). They're still over £100 over the top of the range schroth and tbh if they're that much better then they're just ridculously over engineered for the purpose and from what I seen the adjustors aren't as good quality or as light as those on high-end sabelt stuff I've seen.

People can spend their money on what they want but personally I find it a bit crazy.
