Stem Seals

Right, whats the PCV.........?

Positive crankcase ventilation valve ,

It allows vacuum from the inlet manifold to draw crankcase vapour into the engine to be burnt. They can stick fully open and draw a fair bit of oil into the engine while its idling/high vacuum.

The red piece on the manifold

Pull off the pipe at the intake manifold and block the manifold end while leaving the pipe open , then drive the car for a few days like this and see if its helps.

Always start with the cheapest possible problem first if you want to sort it..

both the seals and piston rings in my car was done with the engine in.... when i rang my local honda garage and asked before i started, they said it couldnt be done.... shows how much they no lol but in fairness every mechanic around were i live said it couldnt be done either but we succeeded :win:

Is skimming the head neccesary?

Also can someone confirm how to check if the valve guides need replacing?

There is no reason why you cant fit the piston rings in situ, talking to a honda mechanic its fine, all be it removing the connecting rods from under the sump is tricky
