Yes lads. I know that b16b civic's are known to be Smokey but I just wanted to know or find out if anyone on here knew a way to stop them from being as smokey. Would I have to change anything inside the engine or would a simple oil and filter change solve the problem :nice: thanks lads

If its blueish grey smoke then its burning oil, that will be more than likey mean new piston rings, rebore and hone and new valve stem seals and maybe valve guides while the head is off

The rebore, honing is very important and if the engine is not properly built and run in correctly after it can be just as smokey as before the rebuild

It can get very expensive and if you were keeping the car you might consider fitting a new oil pump or at least a new waterpump and timing belt at the same time

Right right. Am planning on keeping the car for a long time lad so could be done as I was thinking on doing work inside the engine. Its not wile bad lad but just annoying more than anything eles

Nothing will fix the problem apart from a proper rebuild, choose who you use to to the rebuild very carefully if you are not doing the work yourself.

Also factor in how much it will cost as there is no point in cutting corners so it wont be cheap to get it done right first time

Do you check your oil regularly? If so, how much are having to top up each time if at all?

Rebuild,.that's a bit excessive. Usually is the stem seals that have worn over years of use. Smoke in vtec is usually normal , before Tec you should get a honda specialist to.give it a once over before you start throwing thousands into a rebuild.

Aye would cheak it every couple of days just to be safe but I would only top it up about 1-2 mil on the stick so it not wile bad on it I think

A boy I work with said it could be seals but though I would ask some of you boys to see if anyone eles had this problem

It's far more likely that the stem seals are the culprit, as these tend to go before the piston rings. Unless the car has seen poor maintenance throughout it's life, the rings should last 100k+, whereas it is usual for the seals to show signs of deterioration before this.

Generally speaking, if you are experiencing smoking under acceleration, then the rings are at fault, however, if the car only smokes off-throttle, or in particular after VTEC load then this indicates bad seals. I believe the vacuum caused by you lifting off-throttle causes excessive oil to be drawn through the head into the cylinder. OEM stem seals are actually designed to allow this, but as they wear the oil usage becomes greater, hence the smoke.

^^ well explained

I probably jumped the gun a bit about a full rebuild but as mentioned if the car is smoking while accelerating and it uses a bit of oil just daily driving then its more than likely piston rings or oil control rings

A few guys I know replaced valve stem seals and the car still smoked just as bad after

Go to a garage and find the actual issue,
If it's stem seals get the guides done aswell,
I have both for sale much cheaper than you'll find anywhere else so if the seals are your problem send me a pm.

iv never heard a beter reason to b18cr lad u wanted more power anyway the mods you had planned would work beter on the b18 neway :D

My B16B is smokey due to worn piston rings. Burns oil like a bitch! I'm going B18 with mine. Got a few extra bits on mine tho like forged pistons etc ;) it's a good excuse for a swap!

The only thing that I would be worried about is maybe de-value the car by doing that as they came 16 standard

Well yes that's true but I'm going to be keeping hold of mine so it's priceless to me anyway. I will rebuild the b16b at leisure once it's out and probably drop it back in if I come to sell it and put it all back to standard. Win-win!

fair enough everyone has their own opinions

but the re-sale value of my car would be the last thing i thought about whilst owning and enjoying :p

think about that when it comes to selling time. b18 ftw.
