ok here we go

i need as much advice as i can get please

i am 23 and still living at home (which is sad on its own) but i have been warned by my dad:angry: that buying a jap import is dangerous because of a number of factor.:blabla:

1. No History
2. Could have been Thraped
3. Old car
4. Expencive and hard to find parts
5. Wear and tear on the car (engine, gear box, running gear etc)
6. Allot of money to spend on a car with no history
7. Highmilage and high price
8. Could have been clocked and no way of telling
etc
etc
:blabla:

Has anyone had problems, i have started threads about mileage and stuff like that and read the ones about clocking etc

But still he has put the frighteners up me.

i want an ek9 so bad there is no other car i want, i have the motorbike i have wanted since a kid now i want the car,

if i get an ek9 imported or from a dealer or from a private sale am i going to get stung? is all the mileage etc on the import documents etc,

Sorry to ask so many questions but i need to fire something back at my dad as i am going to get one i just want to know if anyone else has had any problems with their cars, it is allot of money to spend on an old car and i am a bit scared of getting a nail that will cost be hundreds in repair bills that I could be spending modding it to what I want

 thanks for the advice people:bow:

cheers:nice:

Adam

Dont own a jap motor but this is what i'd say about a few of the points

1. No History - Some do come with "limited history"
2. Could have been Thraped - The car is designed to be driven hard, thats what the Type R range is about. Its built for it
3. Old car - I wouldn't call a 10 year old car an "old" car when you look at whats on the road nowadays
4. Expencive and hard to find parts - Plenty of jap tuning places about in the uk that can source parts. Honda will have some parts available too.
5. Wear and tear on the car (engine, gear box, running gear etc) - Vtec engines are a solid engine with excellant reliability
7. Highmilage and high price - You get what you pay for same as any car. For 7k its a lot of car for the money.
8. Could have been clocked and no way of telling - Nothing you can do about that unfurtunately

Adam contact Duncan from FastJapCars

He can find you a nice EK9

on your Questions theres no way you will get any of those problems unless you are Very Very unlucky

In Japan the cars have a very strick testing procedure unlike what we have here in the UK, clocking cars milage in Japan is also a big no no, if a car being sold has any accident history they have to let you know by law etc

I bought my 98 EK9 from Japan and id certainly buy another, its much better in many ways inc condition, lower miles than say a uk vti etc

Parts are not really hard to get either for it

good luck dude

1: Usually ek9's are relatively low mileage, so less chance of having been in an accident, and a if you choose a reputable importer I'm sure you can trust their word on its accident history. Maybe take the bumpers off and take a good look at the body.
2: Ek9's are very good with hard driving, if the owner took care of it the car should be fine. But remember its not the old grandma's buying ek9's in japan.
3:Why would you want a new car? In many cases they are heavy and ugly. And have more electronics and emmisions to deal with. And ek9 will always have more potential than a new civic.
4: Parts are very easy to find for a honda civic. With a type-r car, either new or old, there are some relatively rare, expensive, and more scarce replacement parts that you may have to find. That naturally comes with the territory of owning a type-r. Even so, honda still has most parts available and if your in a rut to find a part specific to the CTR, there is most always an aftermarket solution (ie: if you wanted to replace the lsd) or a private seller/distributor.
5: If the car is in good conditon overall and has low miles, there shouldnt be much of a problem with wear. Its a honda :woot:. Even so, replacements are out there and if the car looks like it was driven hard and not taken care of its whole life, stay away.
6: That should be re-worded " a relatively low price to spend on one of honda's greatest masterpieces, that not many have the privelage of owning"
7: Buy a low mileage one and if you dont want to pay a lot for an ek9 just don't.
8: What is "clocked"?

A lot of japan cars come with a service history papers, my old starlet glanza came with them.

I think you can't go wrong when buying a Japanese car, My EK9 came with 60,000 km, the car was as new.

My old starlet glanza came with 110,000 km, no problems at all.

In my country a car with 70,000 miles in the clock, is considered a highly used car that will need something changed soon or it will give the owner some problems. Why? because the roads here, mostly are in bad shape. I can't compare 70,000 miles from Guatemala to 70,000 miles from Japan obviously the Japan car will be in better shape.

If you buy a car, you can ask for the seller to show you the Japan de-registration papers, so you can see that the car mileage where not altered. Also you can ask for the auction sheet to see the original grade of the car.

Japan sells cars with the following grade "levels"

-1 to 5 Being 5 the "as new" level, and -1 or R (R=repaired) the worst.

My old starlet glanza was a 3.5 grade and my EK9 was a grade 4.0. If you buy a car with a 3.5 + grade, you shouldn't have any issues with it. Also if you want ek9s with a lot of aftarmarket parts, you will see them at the japan auction as a -1 grade, keep in mind this... they give a -1 grade to highly modded cars. Don't know why hehehe

What I'm trying to say is that you need to find a legit seller, you can find bad sellers everywhere. As Neo said Ducan, from fastjapcars is a good option.

And don't buy from ibcjapan.co.jp they don't care about their customers, only Neo likes them. hahaha

Good luck.

I went through AutoAdvan based in leicester when i purchased my ek9 the owner tony is a top chap!
or you could save yourself a lot of hassle and buy from uk

When you see an Ek9 they're in incredible condition compared to Uk cars in same age mileage etc you cant believe it until you see it in the flesh

must be they are well looked after in japan strict MOT equivalent they have there too

you will not have any problems mate if you get one from a respectable import dealer which people from this site will point you in the right direction :)

im 23 and i've put a deposit down on a ek9 my first jap car............i understand where your dads coming from there parents thats what they do lol, but by the time your questions have been answered you'll be alot clearer in your mind and know where to go and what to do!

good luck my friend :nice:

You'll be so damn happy once you've owned one... my younger bro has the new FN2 CTR and after driving it every now and then, I miss my EK9...

I'd also note that my EK9 is certainly quicker than the FN2 CTR. It's got some very nice interior and specs but EK9 still kicks ass.

they have the fn2 in aussie  ? yeah i test drove one in the uk i totally agree with you its no ek9 and defo no ep3 either........its built for comfort, the engines sooo tight your lucky to fit an induction in it :(

i disagree competely there......standard ek9 will not blow a standard ep3 197bhp, i do believe there's not much in it but the ep3 still wins head down but ep3's are common ek9's are not :D

not one ek9 that ever raced me in my old ep3 ever beat me, my ep3 had more low down power response plus the extra power together with my mods.

but for a 1.6 185bhp vs 2.0 197bhp the ek9 is the better car and for the engine size its not far off + LSD :nice:

power wise, the ep3 has a def advantage.
However, in terms of Handling, then the ek9 is better.

The thing is simple guys, UK EP3 wins in straight roads and EK9 wins on tracks with lots of curves :)

The ep3 is tubby with a very nice engine, while the ek9 is a lightweight with a better suspension setup and the potential to swap in the ep3's better engine. With a k20a swap it would be no contest between the 2 cars.
