OK, so I acquired an S9B (MB6) gearbox for pennies, but as we all know the final drive is 4.2, which is a bit long.

Does anyone know what OEM or Aftermarket FD's I might be able to use instead?

:thanks:

You can use all OEM final drives that originally came out in LSD equipped gearboxes (hydro-clutch operated B series gearboxes). This means You can install:
4.4:1 final drive from S4C EK9 gearbox,
4.4:1 final drive from an S80 96 spec ITR gearbox
4.785:1 final drive from an S80 98+ spec ITR gearbox.

As for the 4.4 FD you will only need the shaft and crownwheel. When installing a 4,785 FD You will additionally need the 1st gear (with roller bearings, hub and friction damper) from this gearbox (s80 98+spec ITR gearbox).

If You want to install an aftermarket FD make sure You will buy one designed for OEM LSD gearboxes. Those gearboxes have different bolt spacing at the crown wheel where it attaches to the LSD rather than the open differential gearboxes (no LSD ones). Otherwise You would have to change Your LSD aswell!

Bear in mind also that Your S9B gearbox has poor 2nd and 3rd gear compared to the mentioned ones. The gears are simply too long for an naturally aspirated engine

Thank you very much Arv.

So is it possible to install other OEM honda gearsets into this box using the existing shafts?

Perhaps the desired gears are not OEM and I am just seeking confirmation on compatibility.

Then why ask....

Just saying,no point trying to make an S9B better with other OEM parts when you can get a type R box for around 400 ready to go with better gear ratios, better FD, and, better LSD. its a no brainer.

I am asking if other gearsets are compatible. If OEM ones are compatible, then OEM compatible aftermarket ones will also be compatible.

Point well made and understood, but the question is still there, can s80 or s4c gearsets be fitted to the s9b boxes?

That might work out to be cheaper than buying another gearbox that I do not need. I ran out of space months ago to store any more spare parts.

If you ask mfactory I'm sure he'll be able to confirm that aftermarket gearset will fit fine. I'm sure the only oem boxes you might have an issue with is non LSD ones as the casing needs to be modded as well.
You've went about things the right way in my opinion. What's the point in buying an ek9/teg box only to rip out the internals to fit aftermarket ones when a s9b can be had for 100 quid.
I've got a spare ek9/96 spec s80 box collecting dust at work. It's already stripped down for inspection and is ideal for swapping into another casing as there is some damage to the original one.

That was not initially my intention, but If I can put in the gearset form an s80 or s4c then It could be more economical in parts and cost.

I want to know if the OEM gears would fit, as then It opens up the possibility of using low ratio aftermarket gears.

Yes you can swap oem gears about no problems as the casings are exactly the same

For the final drive, you need one designed for the B18C (large diff). All B18C open-diff fitments will fit (as they are all 10 bolt), but if you get one from an LSD tranny, it must be from a Type-R (10 bolt Helical), otherwise it won't fit (non Type-R LSD's are 14 or 15 bolt, and the ring gear is part of the Viscous LSD).

All aftermarket final drives and LSD's are designed for the 10 bolt ring gear. No one makes one for the 14 bolt (well, Mugen did ages ago) because, those who upgrade, also upgrade away from the crappy Viscous LSD.

For the gears, you can change 3rd, 4th and 5th from any B-Series Hydro tranny (or 4th and 5th from any H-Series tranny). 1st and 2nd gear can also be changed, but are aftermarket.
