I would have a good mechanic take a look at it before I did anything.

How much water did you have to fill your rad up by after it cooled down?
Might have a small leak somewhere, I had a slit in my top hose that leaked a lot of water and the temp went up. Might be worth getting a pressure test done? My mechanic attaches this pump thingy to the rad and pumps it up. I also once had loose coolant hoses to the iacv that leaked... Is it filling up the header tank after a rag? could be the h gasket in that case?
Someone spoke about the thermostat going. Mine perished and now I don't have one at all after we removed it. (had loads of bits of black **** in the coolant from the material of the thermostat).
Was the heaters getting hot and then blowing cold? This would suggest HG also. I'd perform a compression test and a block test first.
I wouldn't worry too much. My car has over heated a few times in the past. No damage has ever been done. I'd put my money on thermostat being the problem. They stop openning, can take longer to open....
Good old uncle Tama
you may as well replace it with a better/bigger rad while your there
I'd just fix what evers causing it to over heat and go from there. You'll most likely be OK.
bleed coolant, when i had this problem it was due to trapped air bubbles. should be the first thing you do.
Good luck with resolving it. It's always alarming when that heater dial goes up! Let us know what it was once it's sorted dude
What color was the coolant when taken out of the radiator?
