hi everyone, i own a 1.5i ls vtec. it has vtec-e which is very good on petrol. its not exactly fast but for the mpg its alright. I was thinking might turbo it but how would this affect my economy. I drive a lot in London so i need economy. I did a bit of googling and came across this:

1994 Honda Civic D15 3-STAGE VTEC TURBO 55+ MPG - Fuel Economy, Hypermiling, EcoModding News and Forum - EcoModder.com

i know my car isnt 3 stage but would it be possible to set up something similar to this? i.e. no turbo at low revs and when i step on it all hell breaks loose.

thanks

what exactly are you after? more power? more fun? are you looking for specific hp goal? how much do you want to spend?

i guess a bit of power and bit of fun. my civic from 0-2500 revs does not move at all which doesnt bother me due to the petrol saving, but after 2500-4500 it feels the car is lacking something.

I do not have a specific hp goal but i do have a budget of MAX £1000 and i am hoping not to produce an amount of power that i have to mess around with the engine internals (the research i done scare the **** out of me!)

thats okay, well if you want only a little power at lower rpm is sounds like you want more torque, i very rarely suggest this but i think you might be happy with a JRSC and they are much cheaper thatn turbo setups.

a did a quick google and i think it would be ideal. would it always be on or only when i floor it?

JRSC is a positive displacement supercharger and as such will always be on.

:( after some more googling I have decided to give up. The only way to get power and economy is to get hold of d15b JDM engine. it has 3stage vtec. economy-standard-power. Im going to hold out till 1 of these rare engine come on the market or i get enough money to get a b16 engine and maintain it.

separate question as you seem to know what your talking about, what about swapping the gearbox to 1 with lower ratios. from what i understand my economy will not be reduced except on the motorway where it will revving higher at lower speeds, not really an issue for me as i drive around in city. But will it actually help me go faster?

thanks

why has it to be a d-series? why not swapping for a B-series or K-series?

my d15z7 (i think thats the enginge) gets 35mpg+ while driving around in city and even higher when on motorway/dual carriageway. With petrol prices increasing every 5 minutes i really cant afford higher petrol costs on a daily basis. If i was swapping to another d-series it would only be d15b JDM because it has similar mpg but also 3stage vtec (better performance).

getting power is straightforward, throw in a b15 and a turbo and/or supercharger for even more power but economy at the same time is what i am after.

anytime you make more power you will burn more fuel. you can drive around behaving and get good gas mileage in my turbo civic 25mpg but you start driving hard and you get about 12mpg.

thanks for the help, just to let you all know im getting a d15b!!! paid deposit and going to pick it up in a week or 2. 130bhp while getting around 45mpg (combined)!! cant wait
