im looking to buy a neptune second hand was wondering is there any way of knowing its 1

Open it up an check its socketed.

Im sure you would be better getting it tuned to your engine anyway so if its socketed its ready to be mapped, the map on it now if there is one will most likely be of no use to another engine depending on the spec.

If it is a Neptune RTP setup with the Moates Demon, you will have a socketed ECU, usually with a USB port on the side. the demon is a credit card size board sat on the socket (other end to where you plug the loom in). You will also need the serial number for the software so you can register it yourself.

if its just a socketed ECU then treat it as such, I don't think dealer mapped neptune licenses are transferable (I may be wrong).

was talkin to a fella who said he has a standard ecu with a neptune chip any1 no anything bout that

Sounds like a straight socketed OBD1 ECU, find out if your local Neptune tuner will charge you for a new license to tune it?

here's all the info you should need:
HRTuning - Home Of The NepTune RTP and TunerView
there are two models, NepTune (rom) and NepTune RTP, the latter comes with a program that allows you to tune the car, the ROM version (ROM = Read Only Memory) is mapped by a dealer and you can't do anything with it.
