My text check services

Does anyone know how accurate these 'text check' services are for doing background checks on cars? Are they as accurate as doing a HPI check or is HPI basicly just more in depth? I have done a HPI check in the past but never done both checks for the same vehicle to check the accuracy.

The reason behind the question is that a car I have seen for sale is advertised as 1 owner from new but the text check service reports back as 4 owners from new. Now surely at a garage they must have some justification to advertise it as a 1 owner car as it's not difficult to just check the V5?
 
I use it for every car I buy. Im sure they wouldn't give false info as they would be liable. They must use the same data base as HPi.

I've used these a few times when looking and buying cars. I used the 83600 one and it seems reliable. Cost £3.00 I believe, the provide you with info if the car has been written off, had a colour change and also the previous owners. They give a average value aswell but that was way off for any of the imports I checked.
 
Cheers Dunc. I wasnt sure if it was maybe an independant firm from HPI which would explain the smaller amount of details providedby them so could in turn be more vague/less accurate. I was pretty sure HPI is a service run by or at least backed by the DVLA. I guess I'll just have to ask for a look at the V5 if I go to look at the car. Surely the garage has done this before advertising to warrant advertising it at a 1 owner car. I guess I shall find out if I head down on Thursday

Yeah mate that's the same one I used. Came back saying the car had never been scrapped/stolen or had the colour changed. Just the number of owners has a discrepency from the advert. 4 owners on a 59 plate car with 24,000 miles is ALOT more off-putting than 1 owner with that mileage at that age

I'd speak to the garage, the may just have listed it incorrectly then. 4 owners is quite a lot for it's age, 1 per year, not unheard of though.

Yeah well not the same car but another one i saw not far i thought of goin to see at the same time to compare. Yeah its not the best.

Yeah they could have. It's easy checked by them to be fair all the same. If it has the right history,well looked after and in good condition and is HPI clear it's not a big issue just now,I'm more thing of the resale for me more than anything being the potential 5th owner
