I'm 23 and currently working for Toyota as a Pro Tech, been with them for 6 years and done my apprenticeship with them etc. but I have been looking for a new job and I went for 2 interviews and got them both but I can't decide which one to go for, do I need some advice!

One of them is with a Prestige brand as a tech and a very big dealer group. Its a Permanent placement money is 10k a year better basic than what I'm currently on.

The other is with a car manufacturer research and development centre as a tech/engineer but is yearly contract work. Money is better than the prestige brand by 5k a year, more holidays etc. but I'm just worried about leaving a permanent job for contract work.

I need to think about my career progression in all of this Aswell. I no if I take the prestige dealer it will open up doors into other prestige dealers to go work for eventually. But with the R&D job I'm not sure where it would take me as its a different field. It would be nice to get off the tools as such and leave the workshop stresses of hitting targets behind, it's more of an interesting job working on future models and i goto work in a shirt and tie and it appeals to me more my only worry is it being contract.

Does anybody on here have any experience with contract work?

Im roughly in the same place.

If your looking to progress further no doubt R&D , Manufacturing or Testing with a manufacturer is a big plus on your CV that will stand to you in future more than being a tech at a high end dealer.

You got to look at it , yeah its only a years contract but you never know what can come of it , maybe a 2nd , 3rd year there or a chance to move to a new area within the same group.

At very least the contacts and experience are worth it.

First thing, well done on getting both. If it was me, the way things are Id probably go for the job that was permanent, I know people that take jobs that pay more but are only temporary and its fun while it lasts but then you have to find a job again afterwards, and unless you are strong enough to save most of your money it will be hard to lose the job after a year and then have to find another job, which will probably pay you less. Its very easy to get used to how much you earn and allocate it to various things, so when you leave and get a lower paid job you will get a kick in the face and have to learn to spend less and live on less technically, which is a big thing to have to do. So bottom line for me Id go with the job that is more secure, and its more than your on now, so its a bonus anyway.

As far as I understand getting into r&d is pretty difficult so I wouldn't turn that job down.

Even a few months will stand great on your cv and getting a job at a big dealership won't be a problem after that.

R&D is what I would choose. Simply because I think it will open many doors that are currently shut. Plus remember, a contract often leads to a permanent position, especially if you are really good! Happened to me, I was on a 1 year contract, along with 5 other people and at the end the company offered two of us permanent positions - in different departments as the job I was contracted for was finished, but as they needed those positions filled they offered them to us as they knew that both of us worked hard. You can always go back to being a tech, another r&d opportunity may never come!
