Load rating

Just a quick question, I'm still undecided about what tires to go for and I've noticed that nearly everything I've looked at (195/50/15) has a 82 rating, whereas my present tires (195/55/15) are 84. Will this make any difference, what is recommended for the EK9 ?

Cheers Chris

Dosn't matter. Unless you are going below, like your vehicle weight+cargo is above the load rating of the four tires...

Although the answer is already up there I'd like to get some confirmation if anyone could help, confirm, comment, point out if I've got something wrong,...I guess am kind of a wierdo. Thanks for reading it in the first place :p

I'm currently deciding on which tyres to buy for my EK4 Ferio with a B20v. I'm driving the car on a daily basis and occasionally tracking it. Thought of trying the Nankang NS2-Rs but going for Advan Neova AD08Rs now.

Two tyre sizes have caught my attention; 195/50/15 and 195/55/15. The 50s have a load index of 82 (475kg) and the 55s have a load index of 85 (515kg). The load index designated from Honda for my model is 86.

The weight of my car, according to my car's papers, is 1190kg. The average weight for an EK4 Ferio which I found on the internet is 1242kg.

The weight distribution figures are quite hard to find. I guessed they would be in the region of 60/40 and on another forum one user posted something like 61/39 for his EK4 but there was no information on whether it is a 3dr, 4dr, modded,....

Bummer I don't have the exact figures for my car since the swap so I'm going to make the assumption that the weight distribution is somewhere around 65/35. So...the weight of the car with me (85kg) in the drivers seat and a copy of me in the co-drivers seat with a weight distribution of 65/35 would mean that the front axle load would be 917,8kg, the weight of me and copy me would be further back but let us assume that I'm sitting on top of the bonnet right on top of the front axle and not in the drivers seat and umm co-drivers seat. The load on one front tyre then would be 458,9kg.

This would be the highest load situation I can think of for my situation and the max load would still be 3.3% less than the manufacturer of the tyre states the tyre can handle.

I would like to stay with the 50s cause they are cheaper, the sidewall is lower and with my OZ Superleggeras and lowered ride height, cca. 1,5-2cm lower than a stock EK4 Ferio, there could be potential issues with the tyre rubbing against the inner fender lining.

Any thoughts? Have I got something wrong? Experience with lower, 82ish, load index tyres?

:thanks:

1275kg even with a exaggerated 65/35 distribution is 828.75kg on front axle or 414.4kg on each front wheel. well within the load rating. I think you would calculating for 70/30 at 1330kg?

I was calculating with the weight of the car which I've found on the internet, 1242kg, which is 52kg more than the information that is written in the car's papers cause I don't trust the specification in there. Especially not after the swap.

1242kg + 85kg (me = driver) + 85kg (another me = co-driver) = 1412kg

1412kg * 0,65 = 917,8kg load on the front axle and that would be 458,9kg per tyre.

This would be the highest load situation I can imagine in a real world scenario and from the given information that I could gather. The only thing that is bugging me now is that 3.3% under the max load is not a great safety margin and that with speed there would be air pushing down on the car which would add to the load above.
