Hi put my car through test and failed on rear brake imbalance, so got my father to take both rear brakes apart and check the over and clean them up, put her through the retest there on the weekend and it failed on them again and have got worse.

Was wondering has anyone else encountered this problem he is going to check the pressure on each side tomorrow and if that is ok it should be disc and pads would be the problem.

Would it be the abs unit?

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

rear brake imbalance is not part of the MOT test in the UK, its only the front with a limit of 25%

Hey mate, Is it handbrake imbalance or footbrake? if calipers r free then good chance its the proportioning valve. Cant see pads and discs making a difference unless ther really bad. gd luck.

Im in Northern ireland lad our MOT is VERY strict compared to rest of the UK.

Its the foot brake, cant see it being the discs as the handbrake would have had an imbalance aswel so must be something else. My father sanded pads to smooth them and discs are in good enough shape.

Must mention to him about the valve till see what he says as the calipers are free.

Thanks

Pistons turning freely in the calipers?

Are they able to tell you which side is 'under performing' as such?

Lastly is yours a 98spec ITR or have you upgraded to the 98spec rear brakes? Only asking as the 98spec had the bigger mc/servo to accomodate the bigger brake set up

If you need a replacement prop valve I have a UK ITR one I can pop in the post...

Probably the valve mate, but check the hoses and lines just incase they are bent or damaged

Cheers for replys, think i got it sorted, seems the ABS pump is ****ed as its sending 2 different pressures to the rear wheels, bought one there and all being wel will have the car on the road again :p

I failed on this recently too! was 39% and the limit was 30%, got it sorted though after I got the brakes taken apart, cleaned and rebuilt.

rear brake imabalance was added into the mot a few months ago and they have also upped the imbalance failure from 25% to 30% instead to bring it into par with class 5 mot's. silly considering a class 5 is the likes of a minibus which carries more bodies than a car and the rear isnt required to be jacked up and check unlike classes 4 and 7. explain that one lol
