I'm going to Turbo my EJ9... Need some advice please.

I wouldn't do it with that mate. I'd look into a custom with a used turbo. Would last a lot longer.

Tbh for what a d14 engine is worth, if you don't mind getting your hands dirty when the kit doesn't fit. Give it a go! Cheap enough not to worry about really. Some people have great success with the eBay turbos, some shot them selves after a month.

I think it will fit, but you'll have to adapt a lot of parts, specially on the exhaust side and expect around 180 hp the most.

Most ebay kits, everything will work, but the turbo usually sucks some friend of mine buy this kits and change the turbo for a t25 or something.

They're more the kind of replies I was looking for! Lol what else apart from the exhaust will need adapted? If everything else works fine and the turbo goes tits up down the line then I'll just be able to replace the turbo no?

Yeah you'd be able to do that, I haven't looked at the kit you posted but you want a cast manifold if your buying cheap. A cheap stainless will crack in no time and cause aggro. You'll have to run the intake piping and adapt the bumper etc for your intercooler. Cooling may well be effected if you wanted to run it hard a lot.
Basically to do it properly it gets expensive but it can be done cheap and work.

It is a cast manifold in the kit, it won't be getting red lined everyday, or tracked. like I say it's just for shits and giggles so won't be getting whole load of abuse.

Can you have a look at the link and see if
You think it'll fit?

I'm no expert on the d14 mate.
Find out if any other d series mani fits on a d14. If it does then the kit will fit.
I'll have a look at the link in about an hour, work nights.
Have you ever owned a turbocharged car? Ever done a conversion? If your going to build it yourself you should know what it does/how it does it and what it needs to work properly.

Nope never done anything like it. It won't be me doing the work, I have a few friend who have rebuilt and turbo'd etc Hondas and have their own garages but they weren't 100% if this would fit just because it doesn't specify D14, but it does D15 and 16 etc

Ok, I'll have a look at the kit and let you know what's missing.

Right.
Your likely to have troubles with;
Both the valves, they are likely to not work from the start or at best break after afew weeks.
Toasting gaskets, I'll bet that the flanges aren't machined flat, making getting a seal nearly impossible for long periods,
The bolts and studs will be useless quality and the nuts will back out with the heat and vibration.
I didn't see a bung for the oil return either, may be there but I haven't seen it.
You'll then need management, injectors, probably a clutch aswell.

After that then it's things you should do, like brakes and tyres!

Game over for that then. I knew about the injectors etc but think I'll just hang off and spend a bit more money on a custom set up. Not that I've get a clue where to get that

Yeah I toyed with the idea myself. The only place your going to get info on used or custom is civic life. Have you looked at the D series forum? Not been on it for 3 years so not sure if it's still going but there would likely be some one on there. Plenty of people with MX-5s using OEM turbos from foresters etc and getting custom kits done.

You have got to ask yourself if its worth it though. I can see the fun in doing it with the £500 turbo kit as its cheep and may be ok, may not. But putting money into a custom setup.... for an ej9?? You can get the for what, less than £500. Plus you can't really just whack a turbo on an ej9, or any car for that matter, without thinking about brakes, suspension, tyres etc..

Why not just buy an ek4? Enjoy that for a bit, then look into turbos then? Just a thought...

As above, have you considered things like new engine management, mapping fees, uprated brakes etc? I know the kit is just over £500 (although it will be coming from Asia or USA, so you might get stung by import tax and duty!!!) but in the end the whole conversion will be well over a grand, and that's with doing everything on the cheap really!
I'm not saying not to do it - give it a bash if you have the funds and want to do it, just put everything down on the paper before you start, the cost of these things can be surprisingly high. I've been thinking about building a high comp NA B16B for a while, which from a £/bhp point of view is a complete economical nonsense, but I just like the idea so why not!

I know id have to change brakes and management etc but I know the right people to get it done at mates rates. Was only going to turbo it for a bit of fun and if it went tits up then it's easy enough to just throw another engine in but I've been talked out if the eBay kit. Cheers for the advice guys
