If you had 2k to spend in your ek9?

My theory on the final drive,
Yes it has the same rev drop as OEM but when your coming through a corner and getting on the power again, you'll be doing the same speed as befor but with higher revs so less Likly to fall out of vtec and have more power right when you need it? Obviously not as good as full gear set but money needs to be saved to be put elsewhere

Back to the first post. Would an ek9 not be as quick stock for stock as an s2000?

While a standalone ecu isn't a waste of money I wouldn't recommend one for now, by the time you've bought it, fitted it and had it mapped/fuel etc you'll be close to £800. Think of the millions Honda spent in R+D. The engine/ecu is mint I'd leave it alone until you decide to up the power imo.

To get the most out of an expensive suspension set-up you'd ideally need to re-bush the whole car first as well.

So this would cost me say 500? I'd do the job myself so no labour. Leaves me with 1500 to put into suspension if this was the route I was too take. Would need to count the cost of alignment into that aswell.
Should be able to get half decent track suspension for 1500?

Tein Flex Coilovers $1600
SPC Cambers.....Rear $120 Front $220
I'm big on suspension It was one of the 1st things I did to my Hatch..
TRust me, you'll feel where that money went with a big smile on your face!

Well I've tested that theory at nurburgring with Matt ek9. Whom I rate as a better driver than me, Matt has some decent mods and I was still 20ish seconds faster in my s2k.
Also I was faster than modded dc2's running semi slicks around brands although only just come the end of the day.
Obviously the driver is a massive part in a track car, that's been said already. But matts a better driver than I am.

agreed and you may get an extra 10whp for £800 custom ECU and map on a stock engine which does little if anything to your overall lap times.

^nice vid.
How does this sound
B18c with ek9 head. S4c gearbox with mugen LSD with a set of gaz coilovers?
Sound good for 2k?

No chassis mods? You think it would be faster with just the gear set and diff?

Yeah. Diffs make a huge difference. They allow you to properly put the power down. I had a S13 with a 2-Way Tomei Diff. It was the best thing I ever bought and put on the car.

The gear set will be important as well. There is a great manual called Auto Math ( Auto Math Handbook Basic Math for Automotive enthusiasts by John Lawlor 1992 | eBay ). Gear ratios allow you to make more torque, so not necesarily making the car faster, but allowing it to react how you intend it to.

As far as chasis mods go, some are way overrated for the level of driving I believe were talking about. Prime example, I didn't have a rear sway bar on my EK9 for about 5 months. I couldn't tell the difference with it installed and not installed. Granted, I don't drive the car very hard at all.

i reckon the s2000 would be quicker round a track but it will need more effort to drive it quick, but surely the s2000 will be much more fun

From my own experience id go for

* Good brake pads ( CL RC5+ are great )
* Good tyres
* Good regular maintenance ( best quality parts , regular fluids / alignment )
* Supportive / comfortable bucket seat
* Tracktime ... do as many trackdays as you can

Regards gearing , with a gear set , for best results it has to match the track you are regulary on ... even at that , when you travel to another track it may not benefit at all then.

I have an ek4 track car and if I only had 2k to spend from standard my list would be:

Bc coilovers £500
Mfactory gear set £500
Bigger brake setup £500
Semi slicks and catback exhaust £500
Strip as much weight as possible: free

In my personal experience if you had a budget of 2k the above mods will make the biggest difference to lap times and the whole driving experience

^^^ totally agree, im finding it easier to drive when properly fitted with the above and a good racing bucket seat. To up the confidence level, a roll cage helps, in case something goes very wrong.

but this is way above and beyond the 2k budget.

Cool. What's the 500 pound gearset? Final drive?

First thing I'd be doing if I had 2K to spunk would be a B18C-R swap

Whatever's left I'd use on too rubber and suspension bushes

Upgraded pads and discs would be good along with fresh dampers.

£500 is for 3rd,4th,5th gear set. You might be better to change the input shaft bearing at least while the box is open but that is granted the rest of the internals are within the service limits, ie syncros, hubs etc. If you have an abused box then you could be talking up to 1k easy replacing worn parts

You are 100% correct the 1st thing I did to my track car was strip it and fit a roll cage but I didn't budget myself with 2k because its nearly impossible to stop yourself from spending more to have the car the way you want it! If I added it up now I have spent roughly 4k on the car now and there is still loads that I want to do
