OK so Honda has vtec. Do other car companies have their own take on vtec? I have no idea but I'm sure some would have used the same ideas.

Anyone shed some light on this?

I have seen Zetec and VVTI about but had no idea they were anything remotely like vtec.

Good link. Has all the information I needed. I was naive thinking Honda owned the idea!

I am right in thinking Honda uses Variable Valve Timing the most.. and that is why it's knowledge is so widespread?

I think other companies use similar ideas but VTEC is an original take on the VVT system, or as original as things can get these days.

Zetec is just the name of the engine.... although you can buy the 1.7 puma wiv valve timing..

The MGF also has an adjustable inlet cam...

lots of companies have similar systems but it mostly to get better emissions than performance!!! BOOOOO!!! lol :D

Honda was the first with VTEC but it was on a motorcycle :p

Nissan also have NEO

Mitsubishi has mivec as well

Honda may not have been the first but they certainly have the best variable valve timing technology to this day

Vtec stands for variable valve timing electronic lift control

I can't think of an engine manufacture that has a variable lift control as well as variable valve timing it's pretty unique to Honda because of this reason!

I- vetc (intelligent vtec) is basically the same principle but uses a phaser on the inlet cam to advance and retard the timing much like a convensional vvt setup but is abit more complicated more peramiters and abit more controlled I think than the original b series version. I can't explain it but I'm sure some one will :)

Toyota have VVTL-i which has "lift" at about 6200 up to like 9200 limiter on the Celica`s and Corolla`s. Has a proper cross over like tec just doesnt sound as good though and doesnt feel like it pulls as hard once in it :p

It's Neo VVL :D Srsly :p And Honda was the first, but on a motorcycle.

Nissans range of N/A Neo VVL engine are sevearly over looked because theyr so rare in the uk. Im a technician at a nissan dealership and i didnt even know they excisted until after 4 years working there an it was someone on youtube that pointed them out to me, the other guys i work with who have been there 20 years hadnt even heard of Neo VVL. lol

Plus its intresting to know they released a factory 1.6 with 197hp!!!

Just a shame the pulsar is so god damn ugly

fiat were the first to use it but alfa were the first to have it in a production car , i think it was a 2.0 litre engine .

nissan's neo vvl is wicked in the n1 pulsars except some idiot in nissan thought it would be good idea to have the switchover at 7000rpm ( or there-abouts )

vtec is still the best out of all the systems out there , oh ya and toyota also have vvt-ie and valvematic .

Yeah and it is said that handling is nowhere near the 9's. Besides that, they drink oil faster than the BP leak leaks it from what I've heard.

It seems you're right, gues I mixed it up with the first VTEC engine :)
