i have a 1999 civic vti, problem just started today. this moring car was fine, started and drove fine, but when coming home started the car it wouldn't start fisrt time, so gave a lil gas and started and then driving along when i come to a stop at lights, the car starts to hestitate like there's no power but it's still started and the rev's go to nearly zero (hestiatesing) and then back up to 1 and it's fine,if i put my foot down the car will not move just hesitates, have to rev it high and then it goes again. was at a set of lights (downhill) and happened again, went to accelerate off and it hestitated again and then cut off, took a few mins to start (motor was turning but like there was no power/fuel getting to it) then 2mins later going up hill in 2nd and it happens agains hestitated, so put it in first and gave it over 3000 rpm and was fine, it's fine at high speeds, only happens when slowing down. it's happend about 5 times in the space of 2 hours driving home. was on approach to a round about and slowed down in 2nd gear (eneough speed for it to take it in 2nd) and again hestiates and has no power at all, had to put it back in 1st and rev high.

this was very annoying and dodgy driving like this.

any ideas what this problem could be, could it be th fuel pump?

hi mate, does it sound like its running on 3 cylinders when it hestiates? thats what my car what my car was dojng but it sounded like it was on 3 cylinders when it was doing what urs is. i changed the spark plugs and the dizzy and now its fine.

dizzy = distributor... just in case.... and yeah it could also be an alternator problem... check the voltage on the battery while its off then while its running... my car had similar symptoms a while back... it turned out to be the alternator surging from low to high....

Car off - 12.5 v

Car running - 13.5 - 14.5 v

use a voltmeter on the positive and negative terminals on the battery... this is an easy check... then move on to checking the dizzy and the fuel pump...

hope this helps!!!

hi, i will check this out and let you's know. thanks.

i have been alos advsied it could be the inlet manifold built up with sooty deposits

When the cars running if you stand behind it and put your hand by the exhaust is it splutering ( misfiring)

so put it in first and gave it over 3000 rpm and was fine, it's fine at high speeds, only happens when slowing down. it's happend about 5 times in the space of 2 hours driving home. was on approach to a round about and slowed down in 2nd gear (eneough speed for it to take it in 2nd) and again hestiates and has no power at all, had to put it back in 1st and rev high.QUOTE]:secret:

It does have something to do with spark but it sounds like your prolem is in your distributor! All you got to do is see if there is any arcing going on (white or brown burn areas) under your cap. It doesn't hurt to look at your spark plug either even if they look good check the gap!:drive:

hi, will look at this and c if it is the dizzy.

I took the car to honda main dealer and they told me it was the alarm affecting the fuel pressure, so had the pressure checked (no problem with pressure) and the alarm disconnected and the problem is still there. Iso Honda dealers have not idea what they are on about, did tell honda it could be the dizzy and obviously they have not checked it properly as they said it was the alarm. So now going to get the dizzy checked and changed, hopefully that will fix it.
