Heat wrapping pros - cons?

Basically already been answered but...

Pros - Manifold works more efficently due to keeping the heat in which in turn keeps the gas particals hotter, meaning more engery...meaning they disperse from the cylinder port quicker....
This also creates a vacum of low pressure behind itself which helps to pull through the next pulse of gas from the next turn of combustion, quicker.
It also acts as a thermal insulator, reducing the transfer of heat from the manifold into the engine bay area. The obviously reduces air intake temps, water, and other fluid temp etc which all helps when under high load!

Really impressed with the reduction in heat emitted from the manifold with this stuff on.

Cons - Can appear to rust the manifold a bit quicker, as the wrap can sometimes stay wet....but usully will evaporate with the heat....
Arguabley doesnt look as nice as a polished manifold......yet some prefer it.

I didnt wet mine when I put it on, but I will do next time as it does dry tighter (although if you take the time you can get it perfectly tight anyway) But it will also reduce the amount of fibres you inhale!!! as it they get everywhere.

The stuff I used has graphite added, (hence black....forgot what it did now)

Bought from Thermal Velocity | Hi-Performance Exhaust Wraps and Heat Shields - Made in Manchester, UK

Heres mine when I did it.

get good heat wrap, not the cheap crap.
wet wrap i find is much better over dry, will also help prevent the wrap from fraying.
there is a spray coating when completed with heat wrap. I used it and like how it seals the wrap even more as well as keep fraying down to minimum.

cons: wet wrapping is one dirty job, even with gloves on the fibers hurt hands for like 2 days after...lol

i've wrapped two manifolds now and both of them smoked a lot when i first started the car after wrapping.
Anyone else notice this?
and i didn't wet the wrap, so it wasn't steam

yeah mine did this. hardcore smoked for about 10mins,
this is normal

thought so as it did it on my d14 and my b16. i was driving down the road when my d14 did it and the smoke was pluming from under the bonet. when i opened the bonet i thought something was on fire/blew úp

Yes smoke is normal at first start up...it goes away over time.
I recommend to wrap from tail pipe working ones way forward. Cat forward if only doing the manifold.

that might be easier. ive always done it the opposite way

^ive never tryed it that way either.

cat foward tailpipe forward helps reduce fraying of the wrap. When rocks/debris brushes up against it while driving has less to hook onto. More aero too! lol

top of the manifold does not matter as much as the down pipe.

Here is my manifold I wrapped, wet the wrap as when it drys it drys tighter also I would get yourself some gloves and a decent mask, breathing in fibre glass is no joke!!!!!

Nice oil pan! ;)

Great help guys much appreciated :D

I take it the wrap has to be quite wet when working with it?

Just once over with the wrap yeah?

i filled a bucket with water, dropped the roll in, let it soak for 20 minutes and started to wrap leaving the wrap in the bucket of water as I wrapped.

I will do that then! Heatwrap has been bought and pick up my manifold as soon as its off my mates dc2 and I can start wrapping it!

water also helps keep the glass dust down, but still wear protective gloves and mask.
the glass dust will be in the water which will end up on your pants and shirts [use long sleeves], i just threw them in the trash when done.

i recommend latex gloves as well as leather gloves on top of them. otherwise it will feel like 1001 bee stings later on. :|

take your time too, do it well one time not 2 or more.

Yeah gloves and a mask are needed! My mate done it with gloves and he wasnt enjoying it afterwards

Going to take my time as I am not in a rush so want to get it done right
