Good replacement for stock abs?

My absorbers are worn and Im torn between the choice of going for Koni soft-hard absorbers with stock springs vs a full suspension set like Tein or Gab.

I'd like to maintain the stock feeling, Im wondering if anyone on this forum has tried or has info on the Koni absorbers? They are not specifically for Type-R, but I suppose if the damping rate is about the same or harder at its hardest setting it would be fine.

The prices for a set of new EK9 absorbers here is insane at US$1120, hence my problem.

Thanks in advance.

i have the KONI's I LOVE THEM! they are excellent, they have a lot of dampning adjustment so you can make it smooth or stiff, my spring rates on them are 250lbs front and rear, user dut also has koni's.

but what does this have to do with abs?

"blinx"...lol

"abs" i guess he means absorbers... mate of mine has Koni adjustables on his EG6... softest setting still rides hard / harder than ek9 stock rite?

I already posted what my favorite coilover is in the "d2 coilovers" discussion thread. If your just going with new shocks on stock ek9 springs you cant go wrong with the koni's however.

oh thanks for clarifying, but yes even softest setting is still stiffer than stock, it is a sport shock after all, but i still love them! there not cheap though, i paid $120 usd a shock! but not only are they dampning adjustable but they are also height adjustable, 3 slots on the koni version, 5 slots on the neuspeed version, i have the neuspeed version. both are made by koni though.

Ah yes, by abs I meant absorbers/dampers not ABS/abdominals. :p

Blinx: If yours is height adjustable as well its a different model than the one Im getting... mine are only replacement absorbers which utilizes the stock / aftermarket springs, and are only soft-hard adjustable, not a full set of coilovers. Im just not sure if they are as good or better than the stock ones.

Dino: PICs are not available at my place, and coilovers are priced somewhat above what I am able to spend now.

I guess its the Konis, judging by what you guys have said they should be pretty good?

I really love the EK9 Stock suspension! If i change it i will for a buddy club / tein one

I'll second on that buddyclub suspension I have one in my car its good:D

i would never run koni's ever again after having them on my ek4, very bad design for anything other than track use only, absolutely no r+d for ek4 fitment from koni and they dont make specific ek9 fitment

youd basically be buying a product aimed at other cars and even then very little if any r+d in the product

oem ek9 shocks are way better then koni, id look into shocks that have been specifically tested and designed for an ek9, mugen does nice shock spring combo for ek9 (im tempted to try these next as been offered used set at good price) and tein does set but dont know much about them, few others out there as well

I totally agree, EK9 Suspension is great, for track / daily drive!

there is no way a non adjustable shock is going to be better than an adjustable shock. i dont know why you look down on koni so much, there are plenty of roadracers using koni shocks with GC coilover springs and they are winning a lot of the races! koni/GC is one of the most popular rr set ups. it works. there is not much difference with an ek9 and an ek4 or even an ej6 once there fixed up. so it makes sense that one shock can be used for all trim levels. :nice:

i though you mean abs like antilock brakes  but yeah, here is a like to the shock i have:

http://www.neuspeed.com/products/product_details.asp?app=19|CV&type=2&ltype=ns_import&p_id=1133

it is not threaded but has 5 positions for the spring perch, the shock is designed for stock stlye springs.

the exact reason i went for konis was because they were so popular and reputation, just found that there ek4 design was a joke after actually running them

the ek9 stock shock with some slightly stiffer springs would better than koni setup, suppose its down to each individuals requirements and perception at the end of the day

i guess your right, it comes down to a lot of other factors like driving style etc, my car was originally an ej6 so i dont know what the stock ek9 dampners feel like  but for me koni was the best choice i ever made, i take it throught he canyons HARD and it holds up well.

I have a quantum suspension, but its just to stiff, I will go for tein / buddy club :)

i think most full coilovers are stiff, but i like that :) tein mono flex is my next set up :nice:

Well Im looking for a bit of comfort as well. The car is afterall my daily drive and Im just a creature. :p

Iceman, by bad design do you mean that the shocks are just way too stiff for road use? Or are there other shortfalls as well compared to stock?

Would using some stock springs + Koni dampers be just bumpy, or does it reduce roll somewhat as well?

Im thinking since suspension press is mostly dependant on the springs, some really stiff dampers with the stock somewhat comfort-ish springs would be just... pointlessly uncomfortable.

blinx: Your neuspeed ones cost about the same as what Im paying for the Konis. :( Just, like many things, not available here and whatever are, they are overpriced. Things shipped over may be subjected to tax as well, so its quite pointless. Sigh.

i tried tanabe gf210 springs and then eibach prokit ( i thought springs were problem at first) but it was the shocks, there are too harsh even on softest setting and rebound was absolutley rubbish so they were crashy over every tiny bump/hole in road, the eibach springs gave very uneven ride height and drop way more than 35mm claim so clearence issues became even worse which was big factor for me as well, gf210 springs gave claimed 35mm drop and perfectly even ride height, also much lighter than eibach springs

the best thing for daily driver/odd track day is stock ek9 shocks with slightly stiffer springs, will maintain 90% of comfort and reduce roll slightly to so helpinh handling that little bit

i did have ek9 oem spring rates but cant find them but try and find out and look at different spring rates

I would purchase some OEM EK9 dampers to replace mine, but they are ridiculously priced here.

The most convenient alternative would be the Koni soft-hard replacement absorbers. Im getting mixed views about those though so Im still confused.

Again, availability is an issue in my place unless I am to go straight for some coilovers. Im not too keen on those however, just looking for the closest match to stock EK9 dampers.

stock ek9 spring rates are 250lbs front and rear with the front being linear and the rear being progressive. iceman im still shocked to hear that you had that bad of an experience with koni's ive gone through a few different suspension set ups and i like the koni the best so far, set ups include

stock ej shocks with sprint springs (ok ride)
stock ej shocks with coilover sleeves (**** x10 ride)
tokico blue shocks with swift springs (**** ride)
tokico blue shocks with GoldLine springs (**** ride)
tokico blue shocks with tociko springs (4x4)
koni shocks with swift springs (ok but too much roll and 4x4)
koni shocks with cut swift springs frong and eibach springs rear 250/250 (best)
