looking to do some gearbox mods to my ek4 vti! what would i be better of doing! geting the close gearset:

3rd: 1.695
4th: 1.384
5th: 1.000

or getting a 4.785 FD??????

its daily driving so CANT opt for BOTH! (would be to hectic on the motorway etc) so what would give the best performance? close gearset, or the 4.785 final drive?

cheers

if you go on motorways often, i would say the fd would better than the close gears

Simple one to answer:

1) 4.785 FD you will be doing ~4100rpm @ 70mph
2) 1.000 5th Gear you will be doing ~4400rpm @ 70mph

Stock is ~3800rpm @ 70mph :)

If you don't mind the 600rpm increase when cruising on the freeway, you won't regret the close ratio gears.

close ratio gears man! it's the only way to go, best bang for the buck, it keeps the engine in the VTEC zone, the performance gains are worth more than spending money on a good header & exhaust system. for best results combine with a light flywheel & light alloy wheels for max acceleration.

this is what i have in mind for my EK9, keep the engine stock (for now at least) & spend the money on tranny gears, light flywheel & wheels, put your car on a diet & the results will be very dramatic.

how much of i difference will the close gear set make? will it be as quick as a stock ek9? or maybe abit quicker :p hopeso!!!!!!!!

cheers

you can play with MFactory's gear calculator, it's right in his sig, have fun.

my gut feel says it'll be quicker compared to a stock EK9.
