Wel just looking for opinions on a final drive for my B16a civic. Box is a s4c with 4.4fd at the moment. Car is approx 190bhp and rev limit is at 9550rpm. I cross the 1/4mile in 3rd gear at 9400rpm. If i change to a 4.9 i mightnt be able to take advantage of the high reving engine.same with a 4.7 so maybe the 4.4 is good for me. Anyone have any opinions.

I would keep the 4.4 FD , if you change to a 4.7 or 4.9 your going to have less traction of the line and change into 4th by the finish.

Final drives feel great but I dont think they do anything for acceleration

I read that before i posted. I want someone who has tried this to give there thoughts as im only interested in the best 1/4mile times i can get. Thanks for the help dou DOSvtec

Traction wont be an issue at all. :) It depends you see. if im changeing into 4th for only a second then it myt slow me down but if im say over 9000 when in 4th crossing the line it would be very good for times.

but surely a 4.9 will be better even tho you have another gear to pull, you'll still be going through them quicker which will = faster times!?

I dont know you see. ive always been told if you have a slow vtec use a 4.9 and if you have a fast vtec use a 4.7. You could slow the car down too because of gear changes etc

thats a possibility as well but if you watch vids on youtube with vtecs and 4.9 fd, theres a brave difference form the 4.4, if it was me, id go for a 4.9 as i found the 4.4 is to long in gears for 1/4 mile

id either stay 4.4 or go 4.7 , the gears will be too short for the power u have if u go 4.9

4.9 would be terrible for road use.. If it's used on the road? :)

check out the vid on the mfactory gears thread, that a 4.923

the mfactory gear calculator will show you how fast in each gear

From that video now i think it will be a 4.9 , just at the top of 4th gear at 100mph seems perfect for drag racing a 1600cc.

i have a 4.9 im my dc2 and its awsome, massive difference compared to 4.4 have you a lsd?

Use the MFactory calculator! Works well! Should provide you with what you are after. Its hard for anyone to recommend to you a FD as it is really personal preference.

Here is what Im using...

if you can get a drive in a civic with a 4.7 or 4.9 FD do it there is no substitute for experience. It will greatly help you understand the difference in how the car feels. I have used all three FD and they all have pro's and con's. The 4.9 is great for giving you a revy nature but on long journeys its rather laborious at motorway speeds as your at the point of vtec engagement all the time. IMO 4.4 is too long for a civic of any kind as it just feels like its holding the car back. For me personally 4.7 is the best all rounder as it gives you that revy feel but you still keep a rev band of usability on motorways without hitting vtec when cruising along. coupled with a lightweight flywheel and some aftermarket short gear ratios and you would have the ideal transmission for a civic. all my opinion.

had all 3 and for a car that isnt going to be a daily get 4.9 have it in my teg and its great was a massive difference from the standard 4.4,defo dont regret the 4.9 but i coupled it with an mfactory lsd and carbon synchros maybe thats a thought
