Hey guys,

My EK9 (Prefacelift) just failed its MOT because it does not have a rear foglight. Was slightly surprised as it has past at the same test centre previously with no issues. But the tester said, I must have one fitted now.

What I wanted to know is, how I go about fitting a rear fog light?.
The tester said to just get one from Halfrauds, and bring it back for a restest this afternoon. But I havent got the first clue what to do i.e. do I get an external foglight and switch etc, or is there a way of doing it by just fitting a different bulb to the rear lights?

Thanks

i think thats bull crap , tell that the car comes out like from the factory and it passed mot before.

If i`m not wrong, ek`s had as standard a fog light within the rear lights, thus a button to activate it too. Maybe UKDM ones are different, but if you don`t have a fog light from factory, you must make a new line, because simply tapping a line to your rear lights won`t be bright as fog lights supposed to be and probably fail MOT again. It`s nothing for a car electrician. No more than an hours work.

It is an mot failure and you cannot turn round to an mot tester and tell him that . he will laugh in your face and tell you to get lost with that attitude .

You Can very quickly get yourself an external fog lamp unit and fit it to your car then remove after test if you so wish which is your quickest and easiest option .

Or you can get yourself a hold of a bulb holder from a local scrappys and fit it into the o/s/r (drivers side rear) light unit on the bottom light and wire it up to work in there .

Very simple job if you know basic electrics as you can get your feed from the sidelights on the rear so that the fog light will only work as and when the side lights are on which is the best way

Thanks for that mate.
Apparently you can get a fog lamp kit from Halfrauds. Just checking on there site, but they seem to sell fog lamps and fitting kit seperate?

Are they easy enough to fit/wire for an electrical novice like myself, or am I best leaving it to one of my auto electrician buddies to do it?

I'm thinking about getting the kit, and rewiring it into one of my reverse lights for a more cleaner look? :nice:

dont do it into the reverse light as it needs to be a red light that is used hence why i said get another bulbholder and have it fitted in to the bottom sidelight so that the sidelight still works and when you put the foglight switch on it gets brighter . hola you have a fog light .

pretty simple if you have basic electrical knowledge but if you have a mate thats an electrician then i would leave it to him

Oh right. I thought you could wire it into 1 of your reverse lights as you only need 1 reverse light to pass MOT?, so then you have 1 fog light 1 reverse light?

I do see your point about using another bulb holder in the lower side light instead though:)

no Jap cars (ie cars built, bought, driven originally in Japan) have fog lights on the rear. however since the European models (those sold in Ireland anyway) have rear fog lights there should be a hole in one of the rear clusters to mount a bulb for a fog light instead of getting one of those gay bumper mounted yokes!!!

I had this issue with my EG. I put a temporary light stuck onto the rear bumper. It looked ridiculous but it passed. Then pulled it off afterwards. It looked something like this:

I wired a switch up to one of the rear fog lights, put a red bulb in and sprayed the white bit of the rear light with some red paint! minted and very bright! :)

i removed the sidelight bulb from the bottom of the L/H light cluster and wired up a switch to the bottom bulb on the R/H light cluster.
there is no guideline on how bright the bulb has to be and it has to be either in the centre or the o/s to pass an mot.
if you try it on with the tester and say it doesn't need one then expect to fail on other items.
make sure there is a light on your switch to let you know that the fog light is on, i got picked up for it on my last mot. replaced the switch with a cheap ebay led one

I had a red bulb in the reverse lamp on my colt cyborg import and it passed every MOT. As long as the wattage is right you should be fine putting it in the reverse light bulb holder (with a new wire to it obviously)

if it helps you don't need a reverse light at all... doesn't come into the test..

to be honest fitting the aftermarket one is the easyest anyway..

if you want it to look neat you could always pick up a switch from the scrap yard and fit that in the dash an wire it up to the light.... dont like the look of those shitty toggle switched they give you...

i am an mot tester and yes reverse lights are NOT part of mot...also you only need foglight on rear driver side. as for the light on the foglight switch thats down to the mot tester

Mine just failed too, I sprayed the reverse light bulb red and apparently it wasn't red enough... It managed to pass with a clear bulb last time though...

Edit: This morning I removed the bulb from the lowest bulb-holder on the left side light (as looking at the back of the car) and then removed the bulb and holder from the right side lowest bulb-holder (the lower side-light) and then put the reverse light holder in the lower side-lights place. So I end up with no lower side-lights and when I press the fog button the right-hand side side light lights up as the fog light. Let's see if the old bugger accepts it.

Edit2: PASSED.
