EM1 Coupe
Hi guys,

Recently the b16a2 in my em1 coupe has begun knocking so i'll be taking it out and replacing it with a b18 I've sourced. I'll be using the same gearbox I've got now.

I'm now looking for someone who can help do the engine swap as I don't have any experience of doing one myself and would rather not mess it up :( I'll be helping out of course along with 1/2 other mates but need someone experienced to lead :nice: I'm in the West Midlands area (stourbridge) but may be able to travel if short distance. Preferably have your own engine crane but I can source one if needed. Swap could be also done over 2 days that's fine with me.

Parts from my b16 will need swapping over such as the dizzy, flywheel, clutch and a few other things.

If you're interested and able or know anyone who could help PM me to discuss :) thanks in advance!

Give it a shot mate. The bottom end on my fiesta went and i under went a little 1.7 puma conversion in my garagewith no experience or knowledge what so ever. I basically spent days doing research on where to start, if i had all the conversion equipement etc.

I had a few friends give it all the talk on 'yeahh ill help you bruv' but that wernt the case, it was all me. Once i got felt confident i went ahead and got the conversion done over the xmas holiday period and 2 weeks later she was up and running. Never skipped a beat since but now she's gone lol.

Basically youll be alright mate.. I hear your type of swap is pretty straight forward because you have a vtec loom already. Ima do the same swap into my Jordan soon. May take longer than expected but youll be happy with yourself.

Yeah I am thinking about having a go, though I don't have a lot of the necessary tools so I'll have to invest in some equipment. Also time wise as I'm wanting the car back on the road asap rather than a long term project in the planning.
"Yeah i'll help you bruv" lol fair play mate good on yourself! Will see what I can do mate and may have a crack at it myself soon. Cheers for the support

Yeah just get the basic tools... I didnt have no special tools besides my lil tool kit haha! Mine wasnt long term either but in order for no problems spread it out over 2 weekends.

Let us know how you get on anyways :nice:

Get yourself an engine hoist and give it ago.
If you get stuck give me a txt or pm and I'll walk you through it.

Yeah as lads said it just reverse of what you take off ,if never done it before label everything and take pics of things that you think might catch you out, but Deffo get rent ,borrow, a engine hoist as Jesse said .that's what this site is for dude ,if you were near me I'd give a dig out no problem but I'm across the pond .you will feel good after you do it .

Good idea! I'll make a note of everything and keep it all organised so I don't mess up, also take some pictures. Ah damn haha wish you were nearer then! :) thanks for the support

If you were NW I would help. I went b16a2 - b16b - b16a1 - b16b - b18c.
Have also done two gearbox removals without the engine.
Owning a crane is the main constraint. Next most useful tools are hammer and punch for gear linkage, large socket for hub nuts, balljoint splitter for bottom balljoints. For flywheel etc an impact wrench helps a lot.

Multiple hammers...
I don't remove hub nuts anymore, I just pop off the bottom ball joint and pull the whole shaft out the box. Then hang it out the way.

You don't need ball joint spliter, hammer will do ,gear linkage , just on do from gear stick and pull all out as one ,
We're trying to make this simple for someone that never done it before,

Hammers usually work on balljoints but often dont. Theyre about a tenner, its worth owning one!

It is worth owning one for sure .iv always used a hammer and if hammer is no good I use a bigger hammer lol.

Agreed hammers work but make the job hard work. I broke my last splitter because I used it so often so for the price they are good tool to have.
If the OP is just starting to work on his own car fully then he will definitely use it again.

I've done my fair share of working on my car just not engine, coilovers brakes camber arms etc and have used the ball joint splitter so yeah definitely worth having one! I need a better toolbox with more stuff though lol

Trust me bud needing more tools never ends lol
You'll be fine then. It's just a bigger object with more parts bolted to it than your used too..
