EK9 can't compare with FD2, acceleration alone kills the 9. Chassis is also better.
As with the K20A, even though the gradual delivery might be boring, it doesn't mean it's slower, once you install cams with bigger vtec lobe, they get very punchy when vtec kicks in, just like the original VTEC.
i-vtec isn't just about improving emissions, its a totally supreme over VTEC. Normally if you've got a high revving engine that makes a lot of power up top, your going to loose on the bottom, VTEC tried but was limited. i-vtec is a leap of technology that provides the top end with massive grunt down below with their VTC technology which adjusts cam angle to make more power and efficiently. Thats why the power is more gradual, otherwise it'd just be similar to a B20+b16head.
But really, anything can be changed. If you want a punchy eratic kick in with the K20A, just get a cam with a bigger vtec lobe... easy...
